The 6’6″ Barshow has made some adjustments in his basketball life during the past year. The first one has been in his physical stature in the form of a growth spurt. In the past two seasons, Barshow has grown close to eight inches as he is transforming from a small point guard to a tall wing player.
“It has really helped my confidence,” Barshow said. “It helps me because it has been easier to get to the basket and finish over defenders. It has made the game easier for me.”
The second adjustment that Barshow had to make as a junior was transferring from a small school in Affton to Marquette, which is a Class 5 school. The adjustment was slow at first, but by the end of the season, Barshow came up with some big performances as he helped the Mustangs win 20 games and a conference championship.
For the season, Barshow averaged eight points and four rebounds a game, but he averaged 18 points a game in the last five games of the season. He scored 19 points in a late-season victory over Parkway South and 24 points in a victory over an excellent Jennings team. Barshow also scored 22 points in a victory over Webster Groves in a game that decided the conference championship. His game started to blossom late as he was able to display his ability to handle the ball and shoot 3-pointers.
“It was a little shaky at the beginning of the season as I had to adjust to the new school,” he said. “But the last six or seven games, I really stepped up my game. Being able to finish up strong and play against good competition really helped my confidence.”
Barshow has been running with the Arsenal Hoops 17U team during the grassroots season.
