It was a tough transition off the court for Aiken’s Greg Stewart last season after finding out he would have to sit out the 2nd half of the season after his transfer from St. Bernard-Elmwood Place. “There were a lot of ups and downs the second half of the season. But my teammates helped me get through it, helped me get ready for next season,” Stewart stated. And from the looks of his start to the AAU season, Stewart is serving notice early that he will be a problem for the rest of AAU and next regular season.
Greg has the body type to be an elite backcourt/wing defender from a height and length stand point. With long arms and lateral quickness, he is very disruptive in the passing lanes and is a good rebounder for his position. But what will impress you the most when watching Stewart play is the explosion that he plays with when attacking the rim offensively. Finishing at the rim is not a problem for him rather that be over or around defenders, as he has showed on multiple occasions so far this spring.
But where he is improving the most is shooting the basketball. He has become a solid spot-up shooter from behind the arch and is working to get better in the mid-range areas. “I usually either shoot three’s or go to the rack. I want to be able to pull up in case I can’t get all the way to the rim,” Greg stated. He has already made strides in both areas as his release looks much smoother and he looks much more confident when letting it fly. Another area of improvement is his strength, while he plays strong, he was listed as weighing 145 pounds on the CMAC website.
As he moves through his final season of AAU and toward his senior year, Stewart is excited about what the future holds. When asked about his goals for the rest of AAU and the upcoming high school season he stated:
“We only have two or three more tournaments left. I am looking forward to going to Florida and Nationals with my teammates. As for the high school season I would like to make 1st team all CMAC and average 20 points, 8 rebounds and 3 assist. I also want to help players get better.”
And those goals don’t include the fact that Greg thinks that next season’s team will be good enough to make it to Columbus next March.
Currently waiting on both his SAT and ACT scores to come in Greg would like to major in a program that would take on a path to becoming an athletic trainer. Hardworking and humble, do not be surprised if he rises quickly up the rankings before the regular season begins. Regional programs will definitely want to keep track of this young man.
