A long, rangy forward who likes to run the floor and crash the boards, the 6’6 Townsend brings activity and hustle to the court. He has a strong outside jumper and can attack the paint and finish around the rim. He has good court vision and can see over the top of a defense and make smart passes.
“I also love getting on the floor and communicating on defense,” he says.
He is putting together a strong offseason with Team KC and says the program brings out the best in him.
“I feel like it is very competitive,” he says. “There are lots of teams out there that are working just as hard, if not harder than you are, so everytime you step out on the court, you got to play your heart out. I also have lots of fun traveling with my team and creating a bond with my teammates.”
Townsend says he has focused this offseason on improving his pull-up jumper, ball handling and footwork and has also worked on his athleticism as he tries to improve his vertical leap.
“(I’m) Trying to be the best all around player I can,” he says.
Shawnee Mission East put a young team on the floor for much of the past season and Townsend says he and his teammates learned how to compete in the Sunflower League, a tough Class 6A conference.
Townsend says he enjoys watching basketball at all levels, but says there isn’t a particular player he has molded his game after to this point.
“I’ve never really had a big influence just had a general passion for the game itself,” he says. “If I had one person I look up to now, it’d have to be Luka Doncic. Very fun to watch.
“I love watching basketball in general. It’s not just about watching the ball go up and down the court and someone making a nice shot, it’s the little things. Who’s talking on defense, who’s boxing out, who should’ve been where at what time. Again, I love watching Luka, I feel like he’s always where he needs to be, he’s young, does it on both ends, and has so much potential.”
