Prospect Spotlight: Ryan Hurd (2020)
With his tremendous size and improving skill-set, Washington (Cherokee) junior Ryan Hurd is starting to emerge as one of the state’s more intriguing college hoops prospects.
As a freshman, Hurd was a 5-foot-10 guard, a massive growth spurt saw him grow to a 6-foot-6 guard as a sophomore.
“I hit a growth spurt sophomore year and coach just left me at the guard spot, so it just kind of worked out,” said Hurd, who mentioned his strengths as a player.
“With my length, I can shoot the 3-ball really well, and I’m good at driving and seeing the floor, just things like that.”
Hurd was outstanding as a junior with the Braves, going for 15.5 points, 9.1 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game.
“I thought my junior season went well,” said Hurd. “I led the team in scoring and rebounding, I did a lot of crashing the boards this year, which is something I really worked to learn.”
This spring, Hurd has been playing with one of the state’s best grassroots teams, Martin Bros 17u. He joined the organization last summer.
“I love playing with those guys, there’s a lot of talent,” said Hurd. “My role is to come in and play hard defense, hit some shots, it’s a lot of fun playing with those guys, it’s high-level.”
Recruitment: “I hope to get a lot more exposure with my high school team and my AAU team the rest of this year. I just need to improve my game and it’ll come,” said Hurd.
“I’ve been texting with schools like Southwest Minnesota State, and I’ve visited Midland in Nebraska. I’ve heard from Northwestern and Upper Iowa, too.”
