Prospect Spotlight: Ra’Mir Scott (2021)
Waterloo East has had its fair share of talent come through the program in its history, sophomore point guard Ra’Mir Scott hopes become another Trojan great.
An athletic 5-foot-9 sophomore, Scott has proven to be one of the state’s more athletic guards; despite being well under 6-foot, he can get up and jam with ease, but he’s also proven to be a steady ball-handler and adept shooter.
“I feel like I’m really good at taking it to the basket, but if I get an open look at a long-range shot, I can knock it down pretty consistently,” said Scott, who mentioned defense is what he’s focusing to improve this offseason.
“I need to stay focused on defense, a lot of times I find myself losing my man, like on a back-door or a basic cut across the floor. I need to work on that and get better at it.”
With the Trojans this past winter, Scott played well, averaging 9.3 points on 45% shooting, 2.8 assists and 2.2 rebounds per game for the 12-9 squad.
“Going into the season we thought we were going to win state, we were very confident,” said Scott. “I feel like I helped the team with a lot of things that really didn’t show up in the stats.”
He added: “Next season, we’ll have a lot of inexperienced players coming in, playing high-level basketball; and me and Trevion (LaBeaux) will have to be leaders on the team and really step up.”
Scott’s been working to improve this spring while playing with local grassroots program Waterloo Salvation, and also with All Iowa Attack’s top 16u unit.
“Things have been going good,” Scott said. “We’re just looking to win a lot of tournaments and get some recognition for the team and our players.”
