If you follow Minnesota High School Basketball closely you know that Peter led Hermantown to the state tournament as a sophomore and over the weekend pushed the Northern Lakers into the 17u top ten. This weekend at the Fury Shootout, Soumis led the Lakers past the Matrix for the second time this season and defeated top four ranked Minnesota Fury Zurn earning second place in the tournament.
Soumis scored 43 points combined in the final two games utilizing several timely dribbles to set up teammates, a perimeter three point jumper made at about a 40 percent clip, and a chip on his shoulder that drives everything.
“It feels pretty good to get the wins we have obviously as we come into every game as the underdog and just keep fighting no matter what,” Soumis said. “If our shots aren’t falling we keep fighting.
“We don’t think we are the underdog but according to a lot of people in Minnesota we are the northern kids so they don’t give us that much credit. Every practice we just grind and that is how we continue to get better.”
Soumis scored 19.3 points a game this year with one of the state’s highest assist totals (7.5 a game). Peter led the Hawks to 16 wins including a buzzer beater against Grand Rapids some have talked about as one of the top makes of the 18-19 season.
“I thought our regular season at Hermantown was pretty good as we beat a lot of good teams but it obviously it didn’t end the way we wanted it to (a loss in the first game of the playoffs to Duluth Denfeld), but one game doesn’t define who we are,” Peter explained.
“We need to stay in the gym all summer, lift weights, and just keep practicing. I would say the biggest thing for myself is to lift weights so I can get stronger. I have the skills to shoot and stuff but I need to get stronger.”
If you haven’t seen Soumis play think Peter Leslie from Henry Sibley a decade ago. The type of competitive toughness and court intelligence that simply out-works and out-wills the opponent. Add in a high level of skill and you have one of Minnesota’s better 2020 guards.
The Northern Lakers have a couple July weekends of competition scheduled, they will be at the Northstar Hoops State Tournament in two weeks, and the Hermantown squad also is playing in a pair of summer events so Soumis will be on the court regularly for college coaches to observe.
“I have heard from a couple division three programs that are texting me and some division two schools have texted out coaches about myself, John Sutherland (of Grand Rapids), and Isaac Soumis (of Thorp HS in Wisconsin),” Peter said.
With Soumis everything comes back to his drive to succeed. The drive to prove that he is better than the person across from him no matter where they are from or what jersey they are wearing.
“I have a chip in my shoulder so we are kind of the underdog and we just want to beat those that are above us.”
