Prospect Spotlight: Nate Reed (2020)
Sioux City North’s Nate Reed finished the 2018-19 season as one of the biggest breakout players in the Siouxland area. The 6-foot-3 junior finished with an impressive 15.1 points per game, while also shooting 53.3 percent from the field.
“I believe that our coaching staff always thought that Nate was going to be a major contributor to our team during the season simply because of his ability to score in the half court and his activity level on the defensive end,” stated North head coach Shawn Miller. “It was more of a matter of when he would have the opportunity to showcase his talents.”
Back in January, Reed recorded 29 points and 34 points in back-to-back contests against Council Bluffs Thomas Jefferson and Sioux City East, respectively. It was the best two-game performance since Iowa’s Mr. Basketball Daniel Tillo combined for 63 points in consecutive games during the 2014-2015 season.
“At first I was going to start off on the bench, then Nick (Opsahl) came down with a hand injury at the beginning of the season,” mentioned Reed. “They bumped me up into the starting lineup and I just took advantage of that. I showed that I could shoot the mid-range, shoot the three a little bit and drive inside and create some fouls.”
Reed has used his fadeaway jumper to give him an edge over opponents with the strongest mid-range game Shawn Miller has seen in a long time. It’s one of the biggest reasons why Reed will be among the top scorers returning in Class 4A this upcoming season.
“I believe his best asset as a player that allows him to be a top-tier player in Siouxland area next year are his physical endurance and basketball IQ,” said Miller. “He plays with a great deal of heart and passion and is seemingly indefatigable, playing all 32 minutes a game with regularity.”
Reed currently has interest from the University of Chicago (D-III), along with GPAC programs such as Midland and Concordia.
