For Reservior High School’s John Odunowo, that was exactly the case. Even though Odunowo is still growing into his body, the 6-foot-6 forward with long arms was an absolute force this season. He helped lead the Gators to a 3A state championship appearance, which came to the surprise of many.
Throughout the journey to the Xfinity Center, Odunowo had a slew of double-double performances. One even included a game where he scored over 30 points and pulled down more than 20 rebounds.
“It was a really fun year, Odunowo continued, “no one expected us to get as far as we did. Once the season started, I could tell a lot of teams just couldn’t handle me. I didn’t want to let my team down and in most situations, they needed me to have big games, so that’s what I did. We had a really young team with a lot of sophomores, so I expect the future to be bright for them.”
A few college programs started to track Odunowo throughout the year, but suggested he do a post-grad prep year to hone in on his skill set and transition to becoming a wing. Odunowo was always one of the biggest players on the floor in his county, so very often, he made his impact around the basket. At the next level with his size, he’ll be expected to be more of a wing presence.
Making the transition from a forward to a wing can sometimes be difficult for players, but with Odunowo’s length, athleticism and motor, it should go smoothly. He is relentless when it comes to crashing the glass on both sides of the floor. You don’t see him forcing shots often, as he plays within the offensive schemes well.
There are a couple of area’s in Odunowo’s game that he’ll focus closely on developing.
“I want to be able to grab the rebound and lead the break consistently,” Odunowo told Prep Hoops. “That, and just being able to make open shots. I think those will open up a lot for my overall game.”
Princeton, East Carolina, Siena and UMBC were the schools Odunowo named who will be closely following him as plays this summer for Team BBC and carrying on into his post-grad prep year. He still has yet to decide on where he will attend prep school.
