Prospect Spotlight: Elijah Hawkins (2021)
Elijah Hawkins, a class of 2021 point guard prospect from DeMatha, was a consistent standout performer this spring on the grassroots circuit with New World. The skilled 5-foot-9 floor general has always exhibited a tight handle and exciting playmaking attributes, but is learning the nuances that his position demands.
“I’m working on being a leader right now by controlling the team,” said Hawkins. “I know I can handle the ball, I can shoot, and I can play defense. I can do everything basically.”
Hawkins has acclimated well to the transition from high school to AAU. He mentioned that he is controlling the ball much more now than he did while at DeMatha. This is an important step for his development as he prepares to compete for an increased role during his junior season.
On June 15, when division one coaches are allowed to contact 2021 prospects directly, we will have a clear picture of which schools are legitimately interested in recruiting Hawkins. In the mean time, he will continue to work on his overall game which involves acquiring the leadership intangibles that coaches look for.
Elijah Hawkins is currently ranked by Prep Hoops as a top-40 prospect in his class. To view the full ranking of Maryland and DC’s 2021 class, click here.
