Prospect Spotlight: Cannon Butler (2020)
Only a handful of players across the state averaged double-doubles last season, Columbus Catholic’s Cannon Butler was one of them.
A 6-foot-6 post, Butler averaged 11 points and just north of 10 rebounds per game last season as a junior. And he also was able to put in the 3-ball with regularity, a skill he recently developed.
“I usually can get a lot of rebounds and putbacks, but during my junior year I developed a jump shot and a pretty good mid-range,” said Butler. “I do feel like I need to work on my ball-handling, though, if I am going to play at the next level.”
Things didn’t go as well team-wise for the Sailors, though, who won just two games last season. Butler is hoping to start building a winning culture this offseason.
“I feel like it’s going to be different next year because I’ve been trying to get all the guys together being an incoming senior leader,” he said. “And hopefully we can get together for open gyms and workouts and stuff like that.”
In the meantime, Butler will stay busy playing summer ball with 17u squad Waterloo Salvation on the Prep Hoops Circuit.
“It’s a blast, all those guys have been playing together for years now and they’ve been really welcoming to me. Our first tournament was probably one of the most fun times I’ve ever had playing basketball,” said Butler.
“It feels good to just play with guys who have a huge passion for the game and who you can just tell they’ve been working on their game.”
Also a football standout, Butler is a defensive end and tight end. He recently picked up his first offer from Bemidji State, several other programs have been recruiting him.
However, the athletic post is hoping to hear from some hoops programs soon.
“I haven’t really had anyone reach out for basketball, right now it’s more football for me to be honest,” said Butler. “But I’m extremely open to any basketball coaches that want to talk to me.”
