A strong defensive player, Gutekunst missed much of his sophomore season after he broke his ankle in three places a month into the season and missed the next 10 weeks.
An athletic 6’0 guard with good bounce and some flash to his game. He can knock down outside shots, get to the basket and makes plays for his team with his court vision and playmaking skills.
“My game is focused around defense because I’m I true believer that good defense creates a great offense,” he said.
He is spending the spring and summer running with Drive 5 Select and says he is focused on finishing at the basket and off the dribble.
Gutekunst says he is looking forward to helping turn this around at Olathe Northeest after the Owls finished the 2018-19 season 6-14 overall.
“My school ball season was pretty rough … it was hard to sit on the bench watching my teammates play and all I wanted was to be out there on the court helping them,” Gutekunst says.
Gutekunst says Easton Kock has had the biggest impact on his basketball career to date.
“He started training with me going into my sophomore year and working with him helped my game in a crazy way he helped me with shooting and dribbling, but the thing I’m most grateful for was him helping me with my mental game as well,” Gutekunst said.
A fan of Trae Young and Lonzo Ball, Gutekunst says he appreciates both player’s all-around game.
“They are both very good defenders that I could learn a lot from,” he says.
