The sophomore specially delivered an All-District 9AAA performance for a rebuilding Beech program.
“I averaged 14 a game at Beech this year,” shared Powell after the 14-15 season. Beech struggled in the last two months. They won just two of their final 13 games. Though the 56-47 win over a much improved Station Camp warmed the porridge it was a cold, bleak winter for Buccaneer hopes. Kaleb is promise of a better 2019-2020 season.
Kaleb earned two All-Tournament honors. First, he captured All-Tournament for the Beech Christmas Classic and then followed it up with Friendship Christian Christmas Tournament All-Tournament honors.
“I led my team in every category except for assists,” said Kaleb Powell during a brief April interview. “I can play 1-3.”
Kaleb’s AAU season is now played with the strong independent 16u Tennessee Tiger team. Program Founder and 17u Head Coach Chip Smith emphasizes fundamentals and scrappy defense.
In early April, Kaleb Powell average 14 ppg during Hoopseen’s Bama Jam.
Beyond the mid-range shooting skills that Kaleb possesses he could stand to play with more desperation and even more hunger. In the fall, or possibly as early as June, Kaleb will be required to lead Beech as a junior. Leadership requires a bit more of young men. Can he make those around him better?
Scoring points as a relatively unknown sophomore is nice, but opposing coaches know Kaleb now. He will be tasked with beating defenses and handling traps and double teams. The evolution of his game is necessary.
