West Fargo was one of the best teams in the state last season in large part because of the dominant twin towers the Packers deployed. Hunter Lyman was second fiddle in that duo last year but he’ll have it all on his shoulders next year.
Lyman, a 6-foot-8 center, is playing AAU with ECI Prospects this spring and summer and after putting up 12 points and eight rebounds as a junior, he’s showing why he’s one of the best players in North Dakota’s 2020 class.
“I think the season has been going great,” Lyman said. “Our team has been improving and we have all been playing really well from not really playing together and being each other’s rivals to now playing together and getting to know what everyone does.”
Having the opportunity to play against guys with his size, strength and skill is helping him improve at a fast rate too.
“It’s been great to play against people that are the same size and skill as me,” said Lyman. “To go and compete against guys like that; it’s been wonderful”
A big, strong, broad and skilled player, Lyman does his best work in the paint and around the rim. He’s got good footwork on the block and uses his strength to establish good position. He’s a very good area rebounder and a good weakside defender even if he isn’t a great shot-blocker.
“I’ve been trying to work on my defense and push myself to and defend on the perimeter more,” said Lyman. “I’ve been working on adding a perimeter jumper to my game and off the dribble driving from the outside too.”
Lyman is a two-sport star for the Packers, doubling as a top-notch football player. It doesn’t seem as though he’ll be short on options if he wants to do something in college.
“I’ve been in contact with Minot State, U of Mary, Valley City, Concordia and the University of Northwestern,” Lyman said. “For football I’ve been talking with MSUM.”
