Malik Abdul-Wahid, on the other hand, was an integral role player for the Lancers. His middling junior stats don’t tell the whole story. Scoring 6.9 points and grabbing 5.3 rebounds per contest last year, Abdul-Wahid’s numbers don’t seem too special, but his impact on the game was unparalleled. In the six games that Abdul-Wahid scored over 10 points, Central was unbeaten.
Playing in state at the Kohl Center is an accomplishment that select few achieve. Abdul-Wahid, in two games at State, scored 10 points and snatched 11 rebounds while helping his team to wins over Neenah and Sun Prairie. “Winning a state championship was definitely one of the best moments of my life. The dream is always to play at Madison, so it was cool to do that with the team we had and to be able to represent our school,” stated Abdul-Wahid. With Malik and his teammates, The Lancers will have a great chance to make it back to the promised land in the 2019-20 season.
In order for Brookfield Central to get back to Madison, Abdul-Wahid says “Well, I think a lot of people already have us as underdogs to win it next year, even though we’re the returning champs. It really comes down to the work and effort each player is putting in and being able to play with a chip on our shoulder every game.” Central will be forced to replace some talent from last year’s team, but they return more than enough capable players next year.
So far in the spring AAU season with Ray Allen Select, Malik has been firmly established as one of the best players in the 2020 class. “[Playing with RAS has been] Really good. I’ve been adding some new stuff to my game and our team chemistry is really good.”
As for next year with Brookfield Central, Abdul-Wahid said, “Obviously #1 is to repeat and be a state champion again, but one of my personal goals is to really improve and show that I’m one of the top players in my class.” He said that he would specifically like to improve his dribbling skills and get a more consistent jump shot.
Abdul-Wahid’s recruitment has not taken off yet. He says that he has gotten mail from Silver Lake College, UW Oshkosh, and Bryant and Stratton. With a very high ceiling, the Brookfield Central forward is sure to have more offers pile up as he heads into his senior campaign. Abdul-Wahid has the potential to be a solid player at the next level. Expect the culmination of his high school career to be something special.
