The games were broken up in a Top 40 and Top 20 format with some Top 40’s playing their way into the Top 20 game of their respective classes.
Here are some standouts from the Top 20 class of 2023 game.
Seven Bahati, 2024, Los Angeles (CA)
Bahati is a freakish athlete for his age with impressive length at 6-1. The rangy wing did most of his damage in transition where he was able to lead the fast break himself and get to the rim to finish or slash into the paint off the ball with the same result.
Zachary Davidson, Rancho Santa Margarita (CA)
Davidson is one of the more skilled eighth grade prospects in SoCal. Much like his brother Nick did in the 2021 Top 20 game, Zach, a 6-foot-6 forward, was draining 3-pointers and face-up mid-range jumpers with regularity. The younger Davidson even added a transition dunk to his day.
Eighth grade wing Brady Dunlap was one of the more skilled players in the 2023 game at the Pangos Best of SoCal Showcase.Brady Dunlap, Santa Clarita (CA)
Dunlap’s game is very similar to Davidson’s as he prefers to operate on the perimeter despite his 6-foot-6 frame. Dunlap has a smooth looking jump shot that is consistent out to the 3-point line, but can also use his ball skills and footwork to create his own shot at the mid-range and paint levels.
Jazz Gardner, Pasadena (CA)
Gardner has made significant improvements since we saw him at the Pangos Jr. All-American Camp earlier this spring. It’s not often you see a young big man with his combination of hands, footwork and mobility and the 6-foot-8 center certainly used that to his advantage on Saturday. Gardner also made a handful of strong rim-protecting plays on the defensive end.
Jared McCain, Corona (CA)
Few played with better pace and basketball IQ in the 2023 game than McCain. The 5-foot-10 point guard has the ball on a string and his eyes are always up in transition, looking for an open teammate or driving lane. What we liked most about McCain was the fact that he never looked out of control or sped up.
Dusty Stromer, Northridge (CA)
Stromer has an advanced feel for the game and great size for the point guard position at 6-feet-3. The rangy lead guard doesn’t play at breakneck speed, but he’s super deceptive with his change of speeds and direction which allow him move as he pleases on the court. Stromer can knock down the open 3-point shot or finish around the cup with a crafty layup.
