The games were broken up in a Top 40 and Top 20 format with some Top 40’s playing their way into the Top 20 game of their respective classes.
Here are some standouts from the Top 20 class of 2022 game.
Christian Moore, Brentwood
You’d be hard-pressed to find a freshman with more basketball polish than that of Moore. The 6-foot-4 wing has the IQ, passing ability and offensive skill set to play both on or off the ball and act as a point forward at times because he can rebound, push the break and find teammates or score for himself.
Ashlan Morris, Clovis
Morris wasn’t a known commodity – at least for me – prior to Saturday’s event, but the 5-foot-10 Clovis guard left an impression. He doesn’t wow you with athleticism or fancy ball handling, but he plays the game in such a smart and fundamental fashion, true hoop heads appreciate the way he plays. Morris knocked down a handful of catch-and-shoot perimeter shots and made high IQ passes and decisions.
Jorge Ochoa, Orange Lutheran
Ochoa woke up on his good side of the bed Saturday morning and opened (and finished) the 2022 Top 20 game firing shots from anywhere and everywhere. The good thing about Ochoa’s shot selection was the fact that he was hitting a majority of them. The 6-foot-7 forward continues to mold into good perimeter scoring threat.
Nate Perez, Saugus
Perez’s stock has continued to rise since he broke out during his freshman campaign at Saugus High. The 6-foot-2 guard isn’t overly explosive with speed or leaping ability, but he understands how to play the game with changes of speeds and by taking advantage of angles. Perez rarely plays out of control and doesn’t often make mistakes with the ball in his hands.
Malachi Scott, Long Beach Jordan
Jalen Vazquez is one of the more polished point guard prospects you’ll find in the 2022 class.Scott is still raw by every sense of the term, but he has a ton of upside because of his size, length and fluid athleticism at 6-feet-6. The Jordan High product has another attribute that can’t be taught: A high motor. Scott was a menace on the offensive and defensive glass on Saturday.
Jalen Vazquez, Bishop Montgomery
Vazquez, much like his older brother Josh, plays like a seasoned veteran regardless of the setting. The 6-foot point guard did a nice job of balancing scoring and distributing and already has an advanced feel when operating out of the high ball screen. He can throw every pass in the book with timing and accuracy and continues to improve as a 3-point shooter.
