The games were broken up in a Top 40 and Top 20 format with some Top 40’s playing their way into the Top 20 game of their respective classes.
Here are some standouts from the Top 20 class of 2021 game.
DJ Allen, St. Anthony
Allen has always been an intriguing prospect because of his length and athletic ability at 6-feet-5, but we’ve been waiting for him to turn the corner offensively over the last few months. Allen showed some strides on that end of the floor by knocking down corner 3-point shots with consistency, which then opened up driving lanes for him.
Garrett Andre, Foothill
The 6-foot-9 Orange County big man has made massive improvements from the same time last year. Andre is catching and finishing with confidence in the paint and even throwing down some transition dunks when the opportunities present themselves. The next step for Andre is to get stronger to handle more physicality in the paint.
Nick Davidson, Mater Dei
Davidson’s inside-out scoring ability was tailor-made for this type of setting. The 6-foot-8 power forward not only knocks down the open catch-and-shoot triple off of pick-and-pop action, but he’s also an adept finisher in the key and can do some damage with his back to the basket.
Daniel Esparza, Sonora
Esparza is one of the most dynamic scorers in the area that few people know about. The 6-foot-1 scoring guard can fill it up in a variety of ways and gets hot in a hurry from deep. The Sonora High product gets great lift on his jump shot and can break down defenders in isolation to get in the paint and finish at the front of the rim. Esparza also has the ability to play on the ball with his passing ability.
Brenton Knapper, Colony
Knapper is one of the most explosive guards in the state regardless of class. He has impressive blow-by speed in the open court, a strong first-step in the half-court and can hand out a poster dunk despite his 5-foot-10 frame. The Colony High product continues to trend up as a next-level prospect.
Etiwanda’s Jahmai Mashack is one of the top two-way players in California’s 2021 class.Jahmai Mashack, Etiwanda
Mashack made his presence felt from the opening tip, scoring 10 of his team’s first 12 points of the game. There might not be a better two-way player in the class in SoCal and the 6-foot-3 wing continues to reveal layers of his game. Mashack is a strong on-ball and team defender, but he continues to make strides on the offensive end, especially with his jump shot.
Luke Turner, Rancho Christian
Turner is well-known for his shooting ability from distance, but he’s now showing more confidence with his ball handling which has helped him become more aggressive when attacking the basket. Turner has good size for the wing position at 6-feet-6 and still has plenty of upside.
