One could argue that, there hasn’t been a tournament held with this much talent in one gym in a Oklahoma in a very long time. Here are the forwards that stood out to me over the weekend.
KJ Adams- 6’6- Team Griffin 16U- Austin Westlake TX.
The 3rd ranked player in the state of Texas by Prep Hoops, had a big weekend in Oklahoma. Team Griffins 16U stand out, is the best player I’ve seen in the last 3 weekends. Adams may have a better looking frame than Lebron James did at this age. At 6’6 he is big enough to post up and practically unstoppable on the block. He explodes up, finishes with his right and left hand and tries to dunk everything he can. If he catches it in the short corner or fifteen feet out, it’s very hard to stop him from driving to the rim. Right now he can get any shot he wants around or at the rim. If he continues to develop that jumper, which he will, you’ll be seeing him play on National Television for a long time.
Traejon Davis– 6’6- Team Buddy Buckets17U- HFC Homeschool, OK.
A flat out go getter when the lights are on. Davis made his presence felt this weekend at the Oklahoma State Tournament. Ranked 11th by Prep Hoops OK, look for his stock to rise after this summer, if he keeps showing out. He shot the ball this weekend, the best I’ve seen him shoot all summer. His ability to play inside/out is a key factor in his recruiting. A competitor on both sides of the court, he can rebound and block shots. He had a team high 17 points in one of the biggest games of the tournament while pulling down multiple rebounds. Like I’ve quoted in articles before, Davis is improving in every game, looking forward to seeing how he ends the summer.
Paul Otieno– 6’7- KC Pacers Blue 17U- Sunrise Christian, KS.
Otieno is a kid who flew under the radar this weekend. He plays on a squad that is loaded. With a big upside to his game, he made my list. An athletic forward, he’s a kid who can play above the rim and be a defensive stopper. Offensively, he’s really fundamentally sound and scores a lot off of put backs or dump offs. With a big frame, he got to the free throw line a lot during the weekend. He has nice form on his free throws and feels comfortable shooting behind the arch. A kid who could possibly have a break out summer, if he continues to work hard.
Jalyn Todd– 6’5- Oklahoma Eagles- Deer Creek HS, OK.
Jalyn Todd makes my top forwards list, as he continues to rise to the challenge. He is impressing college coaches every weekend. A player who is getting better in every tournament. Todd does all the dirty work and does it very well. I’ve spoke with college coaches about Todd and they all have been impressed with his game and improvement. They love his upside and how athletic he already is. Mostly D2s and NAIA’s, if he keeps having big weekends, more college coaches and offers will arrive. Todd goes out in every game looking to win and to do it at a high level. If he keeps bringing the thundering dunks and his intensity on the defensive end, his stock will rise.
Cade Berg– 6’5- KC Pacers Blue- Blue Springs South, KS.
A walking bucket, this kid had a great showing at the Oklahoma State Tournament. One of his best games of the weekend, Berg dropped 20 points and made it look effortless. He was getting to the rim, pulling up mid-range, floaters, step backs, all the above. No disrespect to the defense, Berg is a kid you have to give respect to. Berg is a great offensive player, very headed on reading the defense and making plays with out the ball. Holding no offers as of Saturday, look for that to change as the summer goes on.
