With teams from NY2LA, Adidas Gauntlet, and UAA this event was filled with talent at every level. Below are some players who impressed and are worthy of recognition.
Linden Holder MVPLinden Holder 5’11 Warren De La Sale/Michigan Goonies 16u- As an opposing coach, Holder was a matchup problem. Part of that had to do with the size and versatility that the whole Goonies squad had. But a large part of that was the speed and strong shooting touch that Holder possesses. Holder was lethal from deep in bracket play against North Oakland Wolfpack Black. With defenders in front of him, the sophomore guard still knocked down triples from deep. He also has a very nice handle with the ball and showed a strong IQ and good facilitating skills. He led his squad to the 16U championship and was named MVP. Holder’s stock will continue to rise throughout this AAU season.
Eric Elizondo 5’10 Milford/NO Wolfpack 16u Purple- Elizondo is a smooth point guard and showcased his talent all weekend. He showed a strong jumper and a mean crosser that created space for him and his team this weekend. The young guard even started a couple games on varsity for district champs, Milford. Unfortunately in bracket play, Elizondo sprained his ankle sidelining him for the rest of tournament. However, he still elevated his leg on the bench and hopped over to the huddle during timeouts. The Milford guard is a leader and this is just the beginning for him.
Justin Stone 5’10 Notre Dame Prep/NO Wolfpack 16u Purple- When Elizondo was sidelined, Stone stepped up. Like his backcourt mate Elizondo, Stone showed a strong handle with the rock as well as a smooth jumper. With other teammates sidelined, the sophomore guard played four games on championship Sunday with little to no rest besides an hour in between each game. The kid has a motor, but what’s most impressive about him is his lateral speed. He is a very strong defender especially on the perimeter. He classifies as a 2-way player and is poised for a big weekend this weekend at the Moneyball Shootout.
Mason Canfield 5’11 Bloomfield Hills/Michigan Playmakers 16u- Canfield is coming off a stellar sophomore campaign and has continued it into AAU play. He had a strong game Saturday afternoon against Flint’s Finest (UA Rise). He showed strong on ball defense as well as strong leadership and an outside jumper.
Payton Lee 5’10 Wyoming/B3 Athletics 16u- In their inaugural season, Lee is the key to their success. Early on. it was clear to see that their offense ran through him. The young Wyoming guard guard can pull it from team, but he also has a quick first step which makes him a problem for opposing defenses. In the open court, he has speed which creates a lane for himself or a drop off down low for a teammate. He is a player that will continue to develop and can benefit a coach’s program in a couple of years.
