The final tournament of the spring grassroots season brings a number of the top Adidas programs on the West Coast, as well as many of the best non-sponsored programs, to Orange Lutheran and surrounding gyms for the grueling, four-day affair.
And with so much basketball, there’s a lot of reporting to do.
Next up: under the radar guys in the 2020 class.
Magic Memorial Day Tournament – 2020 Sleepers
Unisa Turay, 6-0 PG, Team Harden 16s
Turay, known as “UU,” is a very young 2020 who considering reclassifying to 2021, so we saw a lot of him in the 16u Battlezone. A lightning quick, shifty scoring point guard, Turay blew by would-be defenders off the bounce and scored from all three levels.
Caden Starr, 6-7 F, BTI Select
Starr, who hails from my area, is an intriguing “point forward” prospect due to his ball skills, elite vision and patient approach. He also is a very good shooter, but is more apt to snap an assist than score it himself. Starr, whose father is the head coach at The Masters University, came up clutch at the free throw line for BTI in its wins.
Jack Schultz, 6-4 G, Gamepoint Inland Empire
Schultz has made a name for himself this spring as a knockdown shooter. But his passing and ball skills make him a very intriguing point guard prospect. At 6-4 and plenty long, Schultz can see over smaller guards and rarely throws a bad pass. He had one of the highlights of the tournament for me when he dropped a full-court bounce pass between three defenders for a layup.
Dakarai Allen, 6-3 G, Gamepoint Inland Empire
Blessed with an imposing frame and an improved offensive game, Allen starred in Gamepoint’s semifinal win over SDA Gold. He hit four threes in the second half, all off the catch, and bruised his way to buckets in the paint. He’s at the very least a prospect that D2 schools should have on the radar.
Justin Scoggin, 6-3 G, California Select
Scoggin is one of the best shooters in the gym, period. He has a smooth, compact release and doesn’t need a lot of space to get it off. But he is proving to be more than a shooter, capably getting into the paint and creating passing opportunities for teammates.
Patrick Roberts, 6-9 C, Gamepoint Elite
Roberts, a willowy post prospect, has started to assert himself more offensively. He had several finishes above the rim throughout the weekend, and rebounded the ball better than we have seen in the past. He is trending upward.
Tyler Morris, 6-7 C, California Select
Morris is a very intriguing prospect for D3 and NAIA schools due to his inside out skillset. He has a big body and can score with his back to the basket, and boards it well. But he can also step out and hit the open three and passes it well facing up. He needs to continue to work on his body, but he is a prospect on the rise.
Demorian Lowe, 6-8 C, Gamepoint Inland
Big bodied traditional bigs are a dying breed, but Lowe is one of them. He displayed some nice footwork on up-and-unders and jump hooks (all over left shoulder) and gave a solid effort on the glass. He has to get in better shape, as he’s vulnerable in pick-and-roll defense, which is critical for bigs these days.
