After starting his high school career in Texas, Heston made the move to Waukee last season ahead of his sophomore year. With great height and a perimeter skill-set, he’s emerging as one of Iowa’s more intriguing young wings. He scored a team-high 19 points during a semifinal win over Iowa Dynasty, and was stroking it from beyond the arc all Sunday long.
Vasko Novakovic, 6’4 G (Beyond Ball 24K 17u)
The Waterloo West product has had some issues getting his high school career up and running, but he’s been impressive on the grassroots scene for some time now. The tall and athletic wing was running with Beyond Ball last weekend and helped them to a 17u title game, where he was actually his team’s leading scorer in a narrow loss, going for 17 points and scoring in a multitude of ways.
Curran Ingram
Curran Ingram, 6’2 G (Pure Prep 17u)
He had a breakout season with Des Moines Christian as a junior and was showing why he’s considered one of 2020’s best guards last weekend. He’s got a nice handle and shooting ability, can score in bunches and be a primary playmaker, but it’s his athleticism and ability play above the rim that makes him a truly dynamic player.
Gore Puot, 6’4 G/F (Kingdom Hoops Navy 17u)
Puot didn’t do much in terms of offensive production, but some of the things he did do on Sunday was eye-catching to say the least. His explosiveness and leaping ability is undeniable, we see shades of former fellow Des Moines North forward Jal Bijek when Puot takes off.
Reid Grant, 6’2 G (Kingdom Hoops Navy 16u)
He’s the steady hand for one of the state’s best grassroots teams. It seems each game we’ve seen Reid play over the past year plus, whether with Johnson or Kingdom Hoops, he always gets his points and he always does what it takes to help his team win. Grant won’t blow you away with athleticism, but his basketball IQ, shooting ability and ball-handling capabilities render him one of the state’s best young guards, hands down.
Malik Allen
Malik Allen, 5’9 G (Kingdom Hoops Navy 16u)
Allen has long-been considered one of Iowa’s best young guards, and it appears the sophomore has done well to develop his skill-set since the winter. His quickness and athletic ability has always been a strength, and his handles are starting to really shine. His ability to get to the rim and finish at 5’9 is impressive.
Jaxon Heth, 5’8 G (Iowa Mavericks-Cleveland 17u)
He’s a bulldog on defense and a catalyst on offense. What the Cedar Falls guard lacks in size he makes up for with speed, quickness and toughness on both ends of the floor. He moves his feet well defensively, it’s tough to get by him. Offensively, he can get into the lane and create for teammates.
Colby Christensen, 6’7 C (Beyond Ball 24K)
He’s a legit 6’7, well-coordinated and does a nice job of scoring efficiently when he gets the ball in the paint. He and 6’8 Valley teammate Will Berg could pose lots of problems in the paint for CIML opponents next winter.
