Here, Prep Hoops takes a look at some of the events top defensive players in the 17U division.
6-Jaden McGrath, 5’11, 2020, Independence, Pray and Play
A confident spot up shooter who can be lights out in a moment’s notice. He has a clean stroke and a quick release. He can fill out time as a point and can handle it some and get his teammates involved. He’s an unselfish player and one who improves the team when he’s on the floor.
25-Jacob Merkle, 6’2, 2020, Eudora, KC Premiere Blue Chips 17U
A good spot up shooter and weak side defender. He is observant on defense and stays with his man and forces them to be aware of their surroundings. He can also play some on the block, but he’s more comfortable shooting from distance than shooting the mid-range or going inside.
40-Mitch Munsen, 6’2, 2020, Manhattan, SSA Elite 17U White
A good defender and role player who understands his job and does it well. He steps up to challenges and makes shots, smart passes and defends the ball and plays off of it well. He keeps his head down and looks to get other involved when he feels they should shoot.
20-Cade Pavlik, 6’4, 2020, Topeka Hayden, SSA Elite 17U White
A good shooter who has a clean stroke and a lot of confidence several feet beyond the arc. He stays active off the ball and moves from inside and out, then goes baseline and back around in search of a jumper or easy bucket. Pavlik is also good at setting screens and rolling to the basket and playing big.
28-Connor Younger, 5’9, 2020 Basehor-Linwood, Team KC Black 17u
A slick guard with a nose for the ball and an eye for openings and passing lanes. He has a style all his own and makes simple plays look better than you planned. He has a great feel for the ball and makes smart bounce passes and can hit 3-pointers from distance with a smooth left handed shooting stroke and a quick release.
