Here, Prep Hoops takes a look at some of the events top defensive players in the 17U division.
27-Kamari Armstrong, 6’2, 2020, Olathe East, KC Silver
A defensive player who is tough to get around and shoots well in the mid-range. He is strong for his size and can get inside and score. He plays smart with the ball. He works when he gets his touches and keeps playing when things aren’t swinging his way. He looks inside to pass and has a team first attitude.
6-James King, 6’1, 2020, Wichita East, Kansas MTXE 17U
A pest of a defender who moves his feet and is constantly looking to force a turnover and kick off a fast break. Kings is a mobile player with the ball and can score through the air. He likes the glass on the corner shot and showed the ability to knock down tough chances.
2-Ethan Lincoln, 6’2, 2020, Lawrence Free State, Grandstand Elite
A player who can sink 3-pointers from deep or slip his way to the basket for an easy two points. He also has good misdirection and hesitation to his game. He can step one way and go the other. It’s difficult for defenders to get a read on him. A nice guard to look out for.
1-Zach Nelson, 6’0, 2020, Shawnee Mission North, Marcus Denmon Elite
Another defender who can overwhelm a guard and force him to makes mistakes. He’s like a shadow that can’t be shook. He has a quick reaction time and bounces around the floor and looks to poke away passes, dribble through traffic and find his way to the basket.
11-London Taylor, 6’2, 2021, Schlage, Team KC Black 16U
Taylor is extremely athletic and has a shot blockers mentality. He looks to finish plays and can play the point or fill in as a scoring guard if he needs to. He has good height for his age and nice length as well.
