LAWRENCE, Kan. — The annual KC Classic saw some of the top grassroots teams from around the state of Kansas, Kansas City and the region meet at the Kansas Pavilion in Lawrence and the event drew several top performers.
Here, Prep Hoops takes a look at several players who raised their profile in the 16U division.
3-Mateo Hyman, 5’11, 2022, Seamon, Kansas Hoggs 16U
Another point/shooting guard for the Hoggs who can rebound well for his size, score well under pressure and handle the ball in traffic or a press. Hyman has a lot of potential as a scorer and facilitator. He sees the floor well but can be passive at times when he has a man beat.
21-Jimmy Guinn III, 6’1, 2021, The Independent School, KANSAS MTXE 16U
Guinn III stays on his man. He moves his feet and keeps a hand on him and directs him to his uncomfortable side. He’s a bouncy player and uses head fakes and body jerks to make a defender commit to a side before he goes the other way.
15-Jacob Herr, 6’2, 2021, St. Thomas Aquinas, PAC Gold 16U
A tall wing/guard who can handle the ball some and shoot from the wing spot. He defends well down low and is able to bring the ball up the floor and facilitate at the top of the arc. He also holds his own against taller forwards defensively.
8-Nathan Johnson, 6’3, 2021, Washington, KC YOBO 16u
A quick guard with good footwork and ball control. He has a strong frame for his size and mixes things up with his long ball and play around and above the rim. He goes hard when it matters and plays great defense on the ball.
4-Chris Marshall Jr., 6’4, 2021, Park Hill, PAC Gold 16U
Marshall Jr. has a good eye for plays and is good at reading a defense. He likes to collect himself before driving, then puts his shoulder down and crashes the basket. He is also needed on the other side of the floor. He has great size and good athleticism. He pokes at passes and can block shots and finish in transition.
