While there were a ton of talented players, I have broken them up by age and region, and start with the 17U standouts from the DMV area.
Milton Matthews | 6’0” G | DC Thunder 17U
In a close win over Team BBC, Matthews was phenomenal on the offensive end as he shot the lights out from tip to buzzer. The lefty from Rock Creek Christian showed the ability to create space off the bounce to get his shot up, and he also was nonstop off the basketball to get open and he made some tough ones with very little space. He showed a quick release and great confidence, which he should have because he didn’t miss many of them.
Malcolm Alexander | 6’2” W | DC Thunder 17U
Alexander was also great in their win, as he showed the ability to create and make shots with the ball in his hands. He’s a little streaky in the way he scores, but he showed the ability to get downhill and get to the rim, and he also showed the ability to make shots from deep, even when covered because he gets great lift during his shot. He competed on both ends and rebounded well for them in their win as well.
Dowar Jioklow | 6’7” F | New World 17U
New World had a big weekend as they qualified for the Gauntlet Finals, and while it was a great team effort it was Jioklow who stood out as the best prospect from the group. At 6’7” he has great measurables including a long wingspan and a frame that should continue to fill out nicely, and he also has game to go along with it.
Jayshaun Freeman | 5’11” PG | Team BBC 17U
Freeman was one of the smallest guys on the floor, but he had the biggest impact for BBC in terms of creating shots for himself and others when his team need him to. He showed the ability to make shots off the bounce with a hand in his face, he showed good finishing ability among the trees with both hands and he made good decisions for the most part throughout the game. He was also a good on ball defender who set the tone on both ends for his team.
David N’Guessan | 6’8” F | Team BBC 17U
N’Guessan recently just picked his first offer up from Howard, which makes absolutely no sense because he should have a host of mid major offers with high major suitors keeping an eye on him. He has great size that allows him to play both on the wing and in the post, he runs the floor and is a natural athlete who can play above the rim and he’s able to put it on the deck and make shots as well. He needs to continue to improve as far as consistency and fine tuning and he’ll be a guy who gets recruited by many moving forward.
Josh Odunowo | 6’6” PF | Team BBC 17U
A blue collar big man who does all of the dirty work for his team, Odunowo was great for them and provided a lot of toughness and good production in their loss to DC Thunder. He’s a guy who’s great on the block where he can use his strength to finish in the post, he has solid post moves and he hits the glass well on both ends of the floor. He plays with a high motor and despite being somewhat undersized he was excellent and productive on both ends of the floor.
