Last weekend at Kings of the Court, Austin was showcasing some seriously improved athleticism. For a guy that already had established ball-handling and shooting ability, the fact that he’s getting up and dunking hard at the rim elevates his stock that much more.
2021 Emarion Ellis, 6’5 G/F (Iowa Barnstormers Gold 16u)
Sometimes guys on Iowa’s east coast take a little longer to get their names heard throughout the state. Ellis is a guy that’s likely been on the radars of eastern Iowa writers for a while now, and we started hearing rumblings of his potential last winter, so we put him at No. 30 in the 2021 rankings. After seeing him at Battle at the Lakes, it’s clear the big, athletic, skilled wing is a top-20 caliber player, at the very least.
2021 Ra’Mir Scott, 5’9 PG (All Iowa Attack 16u)
This Waterloo East point guard might have the highest vertical in Iowa. Despite only being 5’9, Scott can get up way above the rim and dunk with ease. But he’s more than just an athletic marvel, he can handle the rock and set his teammates up for success well. He shoots it OK, too.
Caden Stoffer
2020 Caden Stoffer, 6’4 G (Iowa Mavericks-Villagrana 16u)
This Cedar Rapids Prairie sophomore told us last month that he’s committed to Iowa to play baseball (pitcher). But with his size, length, athleticism and skill, we can’t help but marvel as his ability on the hardwood. Stoffer may be able to throw a mean fastball, but he could do a ton of damage for Prairie on the hardwood the next two seasons.
2021 Joe Knutson, 6’7 C (Iowa Barnstormers Gold 16u)
In a stacked Cedar Falls program, this big and skilled center didn’t get a chance to play with the varsity last season, but instead led the Tigers’ sophomore unit to an undefeated record. Now, he’s showing what he’s capable of with the Iowa Barnstormers Gold 16u, cutting his teeth on the adidas Gauntlet.
2021 Karter Kriegl, 6′ PG (Pure Prep 16u)
Johnston has an overload of talented young guards right now, and Kriegl is caught up in that mix. The sophomore floor general was using his handle and quickness to get into the lane routinely at Kings of the Court last weekend, where he’s able to finish with a nifty scoop shot. We expect him to emerge as a standout player in the CIML next season.
Jamal Litt
2020 Jamal Litt, 6’1 G (Iowa Mavericks-Cleveland 17u)
The Davenport North guard has been impressing Prep Hoops writers all over the Midwest this spring with his play on the Iowa Mavericks’ top 17u unit. Currently un-ranked, expect Litt to make a relatively high debut in the next installment of 2020 rankings and to have a breakout senior season with the Wildcats next winter.
2022 Trevion LaBeaux, 6’2 G (All Iowa Attack 16u)
The Class of 2022 rankings have not been released yet, and when they are, Ames’ Tamin Lipsey will be on top. But LaBeaux has done a nice job this spring of establishing himself as likely the second best prospect in Iowa’s 2021 class. He’s been, at times, the best player on the team while playing up with All Iowa Attack’s top 16u. It’s the Waterloo East freshman’s ability play way above the rim, and hit a mid-range off the bounce that makes him most intriguing.
