Bowen’s PWP Red team was present at the Prep Hoops Oklahoma State Championship last weekend, where Bowen’s all-around guard skill was present performance-after-performance.
Bowen, a 6-foot-3-inch racer, blew by defenders all weekend from both the on-ball and off-ball guard positions. However, Bowen doesn’t believe his athleticism or scoring abilities are the best facets of his game, but rather his passing abilities.
“My iQ,” says Bowen, “and the way I pass the ball. . . I can score at will when I want to score, but I’m really a pass-first type of dude.”
Bowen says that setting up his teammates creates an allowance for his own scoring.
For the summer, Bowen says that he is working on developing a quicker shot-release, the ability to score with either hand through contact, and “becoming a dog.”
Bowen plays under head coach Jermaine Simpson, who is also a member of the PWP coaching staff, at Choctaw; a dynamic that Bowen says has allowed him more complete mentorship.
“It’s fun,” Bowen says, “’cause (Simpson) gets to tell me what I’m doing wrong, my weaknesses. . . He pushes you to your next level.”
Bowen says he spends time every day critiquing himself, with the aid of the PWP coaching staff and his uncle, to become a better player through film study and gym time.
If you’ve watched Bowen in the gym, you may be familiar with muse with the basketball in his hands. Unless you’ve spent time with him personally, however, you may not know that Bowen is an avid fan of another art.
“Most people don’t know I like poetry,” Bowen laughs. “Any time of poetry, like, I’ll just go on Youtube and type poetry – teen poetry a lot, ’cause I can relate to it a lot.”
Whether you see Bowen in front of his desktop listening to Robert Frost or in an empty gym putting shots up, poetic is a pretty fitting way to describe the incoming junior.
