The 16U matchup was competitive and in the end, Team Fly came out victorious. Here’s a look at the top performers from the scrimmage.
Trey Bryant (2021 Thurston/Team Fly) – Bryant is a 6-foot-1 guard who played mainly at the point for Team Fly. He handled the ball confidently and really looked to drive whenever he got the chance. Bryant showed some athleticism in his finishes and while he didn’t shoot it particuarly well, he did hit a couple of shots to keep the defense honest. Bryant also played in the 17U scrimmage and was able to handle the ball relatively turnover free.
Max Smith (2021 Pleasant Hill/Team Fly) – Smith is the starting quarterback for the Pleasant Hill football team, so he’s built as you might expect – broad shoulders with a solid build at 6-foot-2. His skill level was high as well. He was tough inside but could also face up and knock down the open shot out to the three-point line. Smith played a little bit in the 17U scrimmage as well and held his own.
Michael Vorobets (2021 Clackamas/Team Fly) – Vorobets is a lanky 6-foot-1 guard who is extremely aggressive offensively. He pretty much looked to score every time he got the ball, mainly on drives attacking the basket where he was able to use his length to finish around the hoop. Vorobets hit a couple of jumpers but mainly his game was about getting to the rim.
Aidan Slater (2022 Central Catholic/International Elite) – Slater is a 6-foot-1 guard who’s reputation is as a shooter with deep range and he certainly showed that in the scrimmage, knocking down a few threes beyond the arc. Blessed with already a pretty solid frame, he also showed the ability to get to the basket a little as well.
Braden Hudgins (2021 Forest Grove/International Elite) – Hudgins is also known as a shooter but couldn’t quite find the range on his shot. The 6-foot-5 sophomore did work hard on the boards, and on one break was able to get out in transition and throw down a dunk.
Joe Maqatish (2021 Santiam Christian/International Elite) – Maqatish is all left-handed but can be very strong with it. At 6-foot-9 and built like a truck, he bullied his way down inside for a couple of finishes. As he improves his mobility and conditioning, he should be able to contribute at a high level for longer stretches of time.
