There was a lot of talent on hand, including a number of impressive point guard prospects like Ben Shtolzberg (pictured). Here are some of the top ones we noticed over the course of the three days of play.
Ben Shtolzberg (2022 Sherman Oaks Notre Dame/ The Truth EYBL) – Sholtzberg had a good case as MVP of the tournament as he was in many ways the motor that helped The Truth run. The 6-foot-2 guard was constantly playing with energy, pushing the ball up the court, and taking it hard to the hole often absorbing contact while finishing plays. Sholtzberg also showed off a nice outside jumper past three-point range. Sholtzberg has started hearing from a number of D-I schools but readily admits that UCLA is his dream school.
Corey Yerger (2022 Sacramento Grant/Dream Vision) – The 5-foot-10 lead guard is an explosive athlete who can really get to the rim and finish with the dunk. Yerger can change speeds in a hurry and blow by his defender off the dribble and can either score it himself or get it to a teammate for an easy bucket. He can knock down deep threes as well. Yerger already holds a scholarship offer from Long Beach State and other Division I schools like San Diego State and Oregon State are on his radar.
Freedom Rhames (2022 Brentwood/Dream Vision) – The son of veteran actor Ving Rhames was very steady with the basketball, capably handling pressure in both the full and half court settings. The 5-foot-10 guard made good decisions with the basketball and showed off a nice lefty stroke knocking down threes when open.
Damauni Houston (2022 La Salle/Los Angeles Elite Payne) – Houston really made an impact on the defensive end. The 5-foot-10 point was relentless with his motor playing Patrick Beverley-like in-your-face D on opponents, often generating turnovers that led to fast break points.
Orion Tomlinson (2022 Fresno Christian/24/7) – Tomlinson was a solid ball-handler who was one of the better outside shooters we saw on the weekend. He has a quick release from beyond the arc and could get really on a roll from the outside, probably hitting about three-to-four threes in the games we watched him play. Tomlinson wasn’t adverse to taking defenders off the dribble either, showing a pretty nice mid-range pullup as well.
Christian Machain (2022 La Costa Canyon/Coastal Elite Slayers) – Machain is slight and smaller at 5-foot-8 but consistently played bigger than his size. He was fearless going to the basket and hit a game winning drive in a win over BTI in bracket play.
