Perimeter players, especially point guards have an advantage in AAU play. AAU is designed to let guards show case their abilities. This article will take a look at the 5 best points from this AAU season thus far.
Mark Sears (Alabama Fusion)- Without question, Sears has been the best point guard thus far through the spring. Sears has shown his playmaking ability and craftiness with the ball. This kid scores the ball efficiently and has the ability to score at all 3 levels. One negative would be his 3 point shooting percentage, but Sears is not taking many 3s in EYBL. Sears has averaged 15-5-5 in EYBL.
Trey Bonham (Team Carroll)- Bonham has been one of Team Carroll’s most consistent players all spring. With Jayden Stone changing teams, Bonham is the best player and leader of Team Carroll now. He has shot the ball at a 44% rate, but raising his 3 point percentage (27%) will be big for this kid. In the Adidas Gauntlet, Bonham has averaged 12-4-4.
Wren Cole (Nike Elite Stars)- Cole has played very well for the Nike Elite Stars. He does a little bit of everything for his team. This kid shows up and stuffs the stat sheet. He has taken care of the ball, made open shots, and takes charges. Cole doesn’t force the action, and he has improved his on ball defense.
Nick Bonifay (Alabama Celtics)- Bonifay is only 5’9, but he will pick you up full court. He is a very good on ball defender and has good quickness. He has played well for the Celtics and has shown the ability to stretch the defense with his shooting ability. Bonifay still needs to work on being more aggressive, because he has a tendency to disappear at times.
Kam Woods (Nightrydahs Elite)- Woods is a volume scoring point guard. AAU is built for guys like this kid. Woods is not overly athletic, but he has a tight handle and is crafty attacking the rim. His biggest knock would be that he is labeled as a volume guy. His shooting percentages in Gauntlet action shows that. As talented as Woods is, he needs to become more efficient. Woods has averaged 10-3-2 in Gauntlet action.
