GARDEN GROVE, CA—The Hustle in the Sun, orchestrated by the PrepHoops staff, was one of the better spring events in terms of quality of talent. Each and every time slot there was always at least a couple of games that would be coined “must see.” When the dust settled on Sunday evening there would be a number of prospects that would take their respective games to new levels—including Jabari Walker (son of former NBA player Samaki Walker) as well as up-and-coming 2021 point guard Frankie Collins.
Jabari Walker (Dream Vision 16s)
2020, PF, 6-foot-7, 190 pounds
Joel’s Take: Walker is a late-blooming 4-man who has broad shoulders, long arms, solid hands and feet. He runs well in transition and can finish on the break and he shows very good timing and as a rebounder and rim protector. Definitely a prospect that is on the rise with is best basketball ahead of him.
Caden Starr (BTI Select)
2020, PF/WF, 6-foot-6, 180 pounds
Joel’s Take: The multi-skilled Starr plays with good energy and he has a knack to score from the 3-point line to the paint. His frame is lean and he has good feet, a solid 1st step and he impacts the game with his scoring and passing. He needs to get stronger finishing through contact, but that should come as he matures.
JT Tan (Los Angeles Elite)
2020, C, 6-foot-6, 230 pounds
Tan has slimmed down and as a result, he has become more mobile in the paint.Joel’s Take: Tan has transformed his frame and as a result he is quicker and more explosive in the paint. The solid footwork, soft hands, and touch are still evident and he can hit the elbow jump shot. Due to his approach, high IQ, and skill set, he should play somewhere at the next level.
Joshua Upton (Truth 16s)
2021, PF, 6-foot-4, 210 pounds
Joel’s Take: Upton is a physical specimen with good length and bounce. He is a 4/3 who attacks the basket and backboards with a vengeance. He finishes through contact, has soft hands, and can finish above the rim. His ball skills were solid in the open court and he can attack from the elbow due to his 1st quick step.
Damion McDowell (The Truth EYBL)
2021, WF, 6-foot-5, 180 pounds
Joel’s Take: This jack-of-all-trades type would be considered a “tweener” back in the day or in other words—no true position. However in this day and age he could find his way on the court due to his motor, improved ball skills, and winning attitude. He has the length and moxie to defend multiple positions and with an improved jump shot, could evolve into a true wing-type.
