EBO Big Showdown: 2023 standouts, Part 1
Angelo Rodriguez-Gil, 5-11 PG, San Diego All-Stars Gold
Rodriguez-Gil, a slick point guard with a nice first step and elite vision, dominated games that I saw. He exploded by defenders and made good reads when the double came, setting up his teammates with ease. A true point guard, Rodriguez-Gil scored when he needed to off the dribble. His jumpshot is a bit streaky, but playable. This weekend leads me to believe that Rodriguez-Gil deserves to be listed among the top playmakers in the 2023 class.
Patrick O’Leary, 6-3 F, California Select Grey
A long, lanky face-up four with a good skill, O’Leary performed well playing “up” on 15s. He shot the ball well from the midrange, and attacked well using his ball fake to set up short drives. He needs to improve his handle and get a little tougher on the boards, but he’s one to watch.
Misael Sandoval, 6-5 C, California Select Grey
Sandoval also played up on 15s with positive results. He is a huge post presence with excellent hands, nimble feet and solid mobility in the paint. Sandoval also rebounded the ball well, snatching rebounds at their peak and securing them before looking for outlets. He is also a standout lineman, which comes as no surprised.
Jamar Haines, 5-9 G, Young Bulls
Haines is a bulldog of a lead guard prospect. Compactly built and quick off the bounce, Carter fills it up from midrange and in off the dribble. As he continues to improve his court vision, Haines has a chance to be a very good point guard in the 2023 class.
Jerron Carter, 5-10 G, Young Bulls
Carter was so good with his left hand I thought he was left handed. The ambidextrous slashing guard has a similar build to Haines, but slightly more skilled finisher.
Kristian Gonzalez, 6-1 G, San Diego All-Stars Gold
Gonzalez, a smooth combo guard, is wired to score. He has deep range on his set shot, which has an unorthodox release. He beats close outs with a solid first step and has a feathery pull-up jumper. He can hunt shots at times, so improving his shot selection will be the next step.
