The 6-foot-8 Fort Lauderdale Dillard 2020 can do it from inside and out on the offensive end, and contributes defensively and on the boards with his length.
Haynes averaged 11 points and 8 rebounds as a junior for coach Darryl Burrows on a Dillard squad that made it to the FHSAA Class 7A state championship game. His progression has continued this spring with Nightrydas Elite on the Nike EYBL circuit.
Haynes shot 5 for 8 from the field, scored 11 points and pulled down 3 rebounds in the Nightrydas’ 109-82 victory over E1T1 last week at Nike EYBL Atlanta.
He has picked up scholarship offers from Mississippi State of the SEC and USF of the AAC. Arkansas, VCU, Western Kentucky, Georgia State, Tennessee State, FGCU and UAB are all showing interest.
“It’s a good experience,” Haynes said of the travel basketball circuit. “Everyone is good on the team. Everyone on the EYBL circuit is a pretty good, decent player. So it gives good competition.”
Haynes has made a commitment to bulk up this spring and summer. He played at about 170 pounds as an 11th-grader.
His work with a trainer is paying dividends. Haynes has played with more confidence … more of a presence.
“I’ve been in the weight room a lot since after the season,” Haynes said. “Before the season I was in it but during the season I couldn’t be in it as much with my personal trainer. So I have been with my personal trainer since after the season and it got me a lot better … stronger physically. I was physical, but now I think I’m more physical when I play.”
Haynes and Nightrydas Elite qualified for the July Peach Jam.
‘TREMENDOUS HONOR’
Haynes’ coach at Dillard, Darryl Burrows, was a part of the USA Basketball staff at the U16 training camp that took place at University School in Davie.
Burrows and The Master’s Academy’s Reggie Kohn were two of the seven court coaches helping head coach Mike Jones, of DeMatha High.
“Tremendous, tremendous honor,” Burrows said. “I’ve done McDonald’s. I’ve done Jordan Brand. But kind of to represent your country is probably the ultimate for me. To come out here with these coaches, and these kids, and really put in some work for a couple days kind of enlightened me. It kind of lift me up, given me a little more juice.”
Burrows has led Dillard to seven state championships (2000, ’01, ’02, ’03, ’08, ’16, ’17).
