Continue ReadingDuke’s prized 2019 recruiting class took a hit Thursday morning when 6-2 Mission Bay G Boogie Ellis asked for, and received, a release from his national letter of intent.
The news was first reported on Twitter by Marcus Gradney (@MGRADS). Prep-Hoops So-Cal confirmed the news with Ellis and his high school head coach, Marshawn Cherry.
Ellis, Prep-Hoops No. 44 ranked prospect, de-committed a little over a week after fellow So-Cal prospect, Cassius Stanley, signed to the Blue Devils. With Duke starting point guard Tre Jones also returning for his sophomore season, Ellis said he wanted to go somewhere with more time available at the point-guard spot.
“To be successful I have to play the 1,” Ellis said. “Everyone in the country knows I can score the ball.”
Ellis, who played AAU with the Oakland Soldiers, signed to Duke during the early signing period in November. He chose the Blue Devils over USC, San Diego State, Memphis and UNC.
With his release, recruiting experts expect several of those schools to resume their recruitment. Memphis has emerged on social media as the front runner, but Ellis said he has not made any decisions.
Ellis said he has received calls “from a lot of different schools” since receiving his release.
“I haven’t made a list yet,” Ellis said. “I’m still figuring things out.”
Ellis, who is scheduled to participate in the Ballislife All-American Game on Saturday, also hasn’t set a timeline for his next decision.
