Be sure to check out our site for daily coverage of the Bash in the Desert event and follow us on twitter for live updates @PrepHoopsAZ and @CoachDomAZ! Here are the day 1 standouts:
James Burries 6’4 G/F Moon Valley/PHH White 2020
James Burries would be my MVP for day 1! He looked super impressive in their first game, scoring at will. Burries shot the ball decently but did most of his damage attacking the basket. When he is full steam attacking the basket, he is very hard to stop. Burries finished with 28 points.
Michael Batchelor 6’0 G Millennium/PHH White 2020
I really enjoy Bathelor’s game. While he doesn’t excel greatly in one area, he does a little bit of everything well. He is always in the right spots, always boxing out, always making the right plays, and always hustling. It is awesome to see a kid play so hard all the time. You can tell that he has a deep love and appreciation for the game. In day 1, he was an animal on the boards and constantly pushed the ball, creating many looks for his team.
Austin Soloman 5’9 G Diamond Ranch/Rancho Elite National 2020
This kid really caught my attention in day 1. He pulled up from the Powerhouse Hoops logo and hit it! This was enough to catch my attention. I was intrigued to see if he could repeat that shot. Well I was pleasantly surprised to see that he has elite range. He could pull it anywhere from across half court and shot it super efficiently.
Kye Hendrix 5’8 G Diamond Ranch/Rancho Elite National 2020
Kye Hendrix played really solid in day 1. Despite his height, he was able to attack the basket at will. He shot it well from deep but preferred to drive and kick to open teammates. He made a lot of good passes but his scoring ability is what really caught my attention.
Jalen Calvert 6’5 F McClintock/Legion of Hoops White 2019
This kid was by far the most fun player to watch in day 1. He repeatedly swatted away shot after shot! He had a total of 10 blocks in one game. That is insane! Most elite shot blockers don’t come near to putting up that many blocks. Calvert has very good timing on his blocks and has extremely long arms. This pairing makes him a nightmare for the offense.
TJ Tigler 6’0 G Mountain Pointe/Legion of Hoops White 2020
TJ Tigler had a really good scoring performance in their first game. I am really looking forward to seeing is he can keep this performance up throughout the rest of the weekend. He shot the ball extremely well and finished with 18 points.
Nathaniel Lowe 5’11 G Olympus HS/Utah Premier National Red 2020
Nathaniel Lowe is a pure point guard if I have ever seen one. He had elite handles and a very good feel for the game. He always controlled the tempo of the game, as all point guards should. He often drove and kicked to open teammates and knocked down his open shots when they were presented to him. Very good showing from Mr. Lowe.
