AAU Recap: 5/17-5/19 Weekend
AAU is winding down for the spring after this upcoming weekend but the 17-19 weekend was a big one as multiple programs traveled to Atlanta for the Bob Gibbons tournament and others traveled closer for events. Here’s a recap of the weekend’s games and top performers.
Vision Elite 16u went 1-2 at the Under Armour Rise regional event. They played with only 5 players for 3 games and were competitive before running out of gas. Trace Flanary led the team with 21 points per game while Josh McGuire had 17 and Jeremiah Belton averaged 16 points per game.
Vision Elite 17u went 1-3 on the weekend. Keyshawn Stone of Madisonville had a strong weekend and Dre Boyd of Warren Central continued his strong play of late.
M.A.T.T.S. Mustangs 17u were 3-1 on the weekend at the UA Rise Regional. Luke Morrison and Marcellus Vail had big scoring weekends while Dayvion McKnight led the team in rebounding.
16u M.A.T.T.S. also went 3-1 at the UA Rise event with the only loss coming in OT. Devin Perry, Scotty Draud and Ben Johnson were 3 of the top performers of the weekend.
Iam3rd Ice 17u took both teams to Atlanta for the Bob Gibbons event. Their Blue squad had a record of 1-2 and finished early. Brayden Sebastian averaged 17 points and 7 rebounds while Zeke Grier averaged 14 points while shooting 11/22 from 3 for the weekend. The 17u White squad went on a big time run with a record of 6-1 and fell in one of the championship games (they have two champions at Gibbons). Scott County’s Neil Baker had a great weekend, averaging 20 points per game. Available 2019 Tobias Thompson averaged 12 points and 10 rebounds per game on the weekend.
1 Vision Academy 16u from Northern Kentucky went 2-2 for the weekend at the Nike Super Sixteen, losing in the gold bracket. 2021 Holy Cross point guard Brandon McClendon averaged 13 points, 5 assists and 2 steals on the weekend while Holy Cross forward Jeremiah Hicks averaged 8 rebounds.
Kentucky Ambition was in Gatlinburg this weekend. The 2022 team went 2-1 with Chavez Woods and Drew Patterson playing well. The 2021 group was 2-1 and won the Silver bracket. Sam Campbell and Baylor Mattingly were the leaders for the 16u group. Finally, the 2020 team was 1-2 on the weekend and were led by Stephen Moore and Josh Williams.
Pride Athletics sent all 3 teams to the Nike All Ohio Super 16. Their 15u went 3-3 with all 3 losses by a combined 11 points. Bryce Riley had a big weekend including a game winner from half court. The 16u Pride squad was 3-2 on the weekend Keian Worrix of Shelby Valley and Braxton Tharp from Paintsville combined for big weekends to get them to the 15u Final 4. The 17u team went 6-2 and won the Silver Bracket. Rodrell Dryden was named MVP of the Silver bracket while unsigned Noah Back and 2020 Marquis Frazier had huge weekends also.
Manimal Elite 15u had a big weekend at Bob Gibbons, going 6-1 before falling in the title game. Turner Buttry and James Jewell shined for Manimal while 2023 Jack Edelen was solid. 5 of the 6 wins were by double figures. The 16u Manimal squad won their pool at 3-0 before falling to UAA Atlanta Xpress in the tournament. Conner Cooper had two good games while his BG teammate Isaiah Mason was really good the first two games of the weekend. 17u Manimal was 4-1 on the weekend and were led by Tyren Moore of Male and a bunch of Ohio kids.
