Here, Prep Hoops takes a look at some of the events top point guard prospects in the 17U division.
8-Joe Berry, 6’1, 2021, Washburn-Rural, YOBO
A defensive bull who brings strength, energy and skill to the floor. After a highly successful finish at state, Berry is continuing his tradition of outthinking his opponents and using his length and strength to his advantage. Also a fan of the glass for his one-handed floater.
0-Walzel Evans, 6’0, 2020, JC Harmon, YOBO 17s
A solid defender who moves well and puts a ton of pressure on the ball. A point guard himself, Evans has good vision for his size and can play a physical brand of ball up top. He looks to play close then pulls it back for a jump shot or looks to clear the area for an uncontested pass.
3-Javon Grant 5’11, 2021, Pittsburg, Carroll GoL1ve 17U
A speedy guard with solid handles and a knack for coming up big defensively. He is a pest on the ball and keeps his hands up and makes the opposing player work for everything he can. He is also a strong player and can pull down rebounds and go coast-to-coast. A player with a high motor and a clean shot.
13-Jalen Smith, 5’11, 2021, Topeka, Kansas Hoggs 17U
Smith slows the game down and takes his time. He’s an excellent shooter from distance and slowly brings the ball in the arc and scores jumpers and gets assists. He rebounds well on defense and takes good shots when he’s playing off the ball and coming off screens. A playmaker with the ball.
11-Elijas Watson, 5’11, 2020, Shawnee Heights, Kansas Hoggs 17U
A quick guard who has confidence and a smooth game. He has good handles and can win the one-on-one game around the wing. He slips in and out of the lane at times and is a sneaky scorer. He doesn’t pass ahead often bit finds his man and gets assists through traditional bounce passes to his cutting teammates.
