We will take a look at who has signed or committed in north Louisiana and look at others who have yet to be signed.
Signed or committed – Top 25
Of the top 25 players in the Prep Hoops Louisiana rankings who have signed or committed to a college or university, only six of them reside in north Louisiana. The early signing period saw Mylik Wilson (Rayville) commit to Louisiana-Lafayette. Since the spring signing period, he has been joined by Tramichael Moton (Woodlawn-Shreveport)as far as Division 1 commitments after T-Mike signed with Grambling State. Delhi wing Tyler Washington was the fourth Delhi Bear ballplayer in the last two seasons to play on the next level when he signed with Blinn College. Red River big man Jessie Davis inked his NLI with Southern Arkansas and the Peabody duo of Kyron Gibson and Darius Smith both committed to Angelina College. While the signings and commitments might not have had the number of upper division signees as south Louisiana, these players signed with quality programs to continue their playing career.
Top 100 and All State talent
There were five more signees within the top 100 from north Louisiana. Deven Melancon, who led Loyola College Prep to the playoffs, has signed with Southern Arkansas. All State and All-Nela point guard Paul King (Ouachita) has committed to the retooled and renewed Cavaliers of Bossier Parish CC. Jamal Hayward, of the Peabody Warhorses, will take his talents to Baton Rouge CC and play for the Bears next season. Natchitoches Central prep star Calvin “CJ” Carpenter will team with Tyler Washington at Blinn College. Rounding out the Prep Hoops top 100 signees is the wing combo of Sadarionne “SD” Ellis and Rod Stinson. These young studs will be playing at Bishop State CC on next season. The north Louisiana talent will be spread throughout the south in various schools. They are a good representation of the talent Louisiana possesses.
Talent still available
There is still some talented players who have not announced their college intentions. Most notable of those players in north Louisiana is Jacoby Decker (Bossier). He opened his recruitment after an early committment to Grambling so things are pretty much up in the air in reference to him. Ouachita big man Myron Washington is expected to sign next week. Other all state performers like Ja’Marcus Wilson (Rayville), Zarious Lewis (Lakeview), and Gianni Nelson (Simsboro) are still out there and will be quality additions to a program. With other colleges still hosting tryouts and play days, hopefully these players will land in a good place to extend their basketball careers.
The signing period ends on May 15th for Division I so we will assuredly see more commitments during this time. Look for DII through NAIA will continue throughout the summer so any of these players may end up on a campus near or far from Louisiana.
