Braylon Haynes 2021 FYN All-Stars (TX) point guard
- Shooter
- Ball-handler
- Playmaker
Perhaps the most electrifying point guard in the division, Braylon Haynes had standout performances in his teams’ contests. Notably, he scored 21 points in a loss when I saw him at Mansfield High School. Haynes is a brilliant shot-creator and was possibly the best independent scorer in the 16U age bracket. He torched opposing teams from the 3-point line and stretched the defense with hyper-deep shooting and an elusive, swift release. Haynes could easily take the ball to the rack against defenses when he chose to do so and has a registry of moves near the rim.
Antonio Reynolds 2021 D1 Prospects (TX) point guard
- Scoring guard
- Explosive
- Rebounding guard
As for all-around scoring guards, it doesn’t get much better than Antonio Reynolds. Reynolds effortlessly used the handle to create separation from defenders, either vertically or laterally. He’s a great shooter from the catch, thanks partially to his 6-foot-5-inch frame and high release point. Reynolds also rebounds exceptionally-well from the guard position and was one of the most overall athletic players in the 16U division.
Sean Pedulla 2021Team Buddy Buckets (OK) point guard
- Floor general
- Pure scorer
- High motor
Paired with teammate Ethan Scott (mentioned below), Sean Pedulla makes up one-half of perhaps the most dangerous backcourt at the event. Pedulla always the potential to catch fire from the 3-point line, and, in those moments, there isn’t much you can do as a defender. In his down-time, he’s still finding ways to beat you to the rim, on the catch, and in the passing game. Pedulla’s floor vision was one of the best at the tournament.
Ethan Scott 2022 Team Buddy Buckets (OK) point guard
- Shooter
- Floor general
Ethan Scott may have been the most efficient, explosive shooter at the event. When you think about the top tier of shooters at the high school level, add Scott to that list. The incoming sophomore is almost a sure-fire bet out of the catch, especially from the corners. Once he finds his streak, he can do spectacular things with the ball as he routinely hits five or more 3-pointers per contest.
Zaydin Walker 2021 FYN All-Stars (TX) point guard
- Slasher
- Ball-handler
As far as handling the ball, you don’t come across many players as smooth as Zaydin Walker. Walker is diligent about keeping the ball near him, yet keeps himself away from defenders in the same effort. His hot scoring streaks were full of controlled chaos as defenders sat at his hip during a 16-point performance in the same game teammate Antonio Reynolds (see above) scored 21. Walker’s ability to make something from nothing and score at the rim is uncanny.
Jayden Blair 2021 Dallas Soldiers (TX) point guard
- Shooter
- Quick, athletic guard
Sophomore Jayden Blair put on a show in one game I saw him, scoring 17 points in an elite showing from the 3-point line and from the drive. He knocked down a trio of 3-pointers in a solid effort, tight loss to Buddy Buckets. He does plenty of things well with the ball in his hands, but the most impressive characteristic of his game is the way he can play at top speed but keep the ball in his control.
