The gyms were loaded with numerous teams, some of which included very talented prospects. In this article, Brandon Jenkins highlights a few of the prospects who stood out from the 2020 class:
Montreal Pena – Center – Nike Pro Skills (EYBL) – 2020
Pena’s upside is limitless. Many Texas scouts compare his game to 1999 top-five draft pick Jonathan Bender. The three-star center does not have as good of a shooting touch as Bender did, but he has good looking mechanics and it looks as if that part of his game will eventually develop. He easily passes the eye test with his crazy athleticism and long wingspan. His vertical leap is ridiculous to the point where he throws down eye-popping dunks on cue. Over the course of the summer, he must develop more of a scorer’s touch inside and a consistent motor. The sky is the limit for this potential unicorn of a prospect.
D’Avian Houston – Point Guard – Cooz Elite – 2020
Nobody played harder on the defensive end than D’Avian Houston. Which is not a surprise to me because each time I watch him, he leaves it all on the floor. Houston is a ball hawk when guarding on or off the ball. He has active hands and will be the first one on the floor for a loose ball. In the last game I watched, Houston had at least seven steals in Cooz Elite ‘s comeback victory over Texas Legions. The Houston Episcopal guard has been offered by the College of Charleston and Longwood. Expect for Southland conference schools to get in the mix.
Austin Garner – Small Forward – 3D Empire – 2020
Baylor Hebb was given all the credit for 3D Empire’s upset win over the Texas Titans (EYBL), and deservingly so. But one player who has also been a consistent scorer since Logan McLaughlin‘s injury is Austin Garner. The sharpshooting wing has constantly been getting to his spots in the mid-range and setting himself up well for good looks from downtown. He averaged around 19-20 points per game throughout the event.
