Last weekend, Burroughs High School in Burbank, CA was host to the “War on the Floor” Senior Night in the Valley All-Star games. The day featured a few of the top seniors from the San Fernando Valley area of Los Angeles County as well as the surrounding areas. Here’s a look at some of the top performers.
1. Brandon Wilson – Taft High School (Woodland Hills, CA)
Wilson is a true bucket-getter
A little undersized for a shooting guard, Wilson makes up for it with his explosive offensive package. He’s very comfortable with the basketball in his hands and is able to create his own shot, something you want out of a two-guard. He also attacks the rim with ease and is an athletic finisher, able to score against most defenders. His shooting range extends out to the three-point line. Not a bad pickup for a mid or low-major D1 perhaps.
2. Tyrese Windham – Birmingham High School (Van Nuys, CA)
A combo guard in high school, Windham’s size would likely relegate him to point guard if he plays at the next level. He’s a confident scorer with good ball-handling skills. His playmaking can improve a bit but is solid. He can create his own shot and is comfortable taking his defender off the dribble and getting into the lane. He’s confident in his outside shot. Should be on the radar for low-major D1 schools.
3. Daniel O’Neil – Grant High School (Van Nuys, CA)
Another player who was a combo guard in high school, should he play in college, point guard is likely going to have to be his primary position. He’s already a knockdown shooter, he can’t be left open anywhere on the court. He’s good at getting into proper position and spotting up on the perimeter. When the pass finds him, his release is quick enough before defenders can recover. He can also free himself up with a quick one dribble pull-up. Perhaps a junior college route would be good for him to hone his point guard skills for a couple years before transferring.
4. Tyjae Medley – Birmingham High School (Van Nuys, CA)
Another guard who’s a bit undersized, don’t let that fool you. He’s got a high motor and great offensive game. He’s strong and has good body control around the rim when he attacks and gets into the lane. One area he excels in running the fast break. He sees the floor well and can either finish the break himself or find a teammate in transition. Overall, his playmaking game is solid, it will definitely translate to the next level. Also could be a good candidate to go the junior college route.
5. Kevin Stone – Santa Clarita Christian High School (Santa Clarita, CA)
A true shooting guard, Stone has a great offensive game, something you need from a two-guard. Another knockdown shooter, he’s got unlimited shooting range. He spots up well on the perimeter and all he needs is a little bit of daylight for him to get his shot off. He’s decent at creating his own shot and being able to get what he wants against the defense. He’s also a good rebounder despite being a little slight for a guard. He positions himself well on the glass. Another good candidate for a mid to low-major D1 program.
