Gathering a list of players and choosing which rank best fits the individual was a tall task, but we do our best to keep them updated every three months. Our recent update includes an increase in the number of players ranked from 75 to 100. Here we resume our breakdown series by taking a quick look at five newcomers.
#35 | ABDOU SAMB | 6’8 C | FREDERICK DOUGLASS-PG
At 6-foot-8, Abdou Samb has a skill that you simply cant teach most bigs, a motor. Samb is known for his rim running, but also displays impressive touch. He can stretch the floor as a pick-and-pop big, but has to improve at his ability to finish in traffic.
#37 | RAILER VARGAS | 6’7 PF/SF | CAPITAL CHRISTIAN
A native of Venezuela, Railer Vargas is a prospect to keep a close eye on this spring. Defensively, Vargas is adept at blocking shots but has to improve his lateral quickness if he hopes to be successful guarding the wing position. Offensively, Vargas is best when he is around the basket, but he has shown the ability to score from the perimeter. Consistency is key in that department, however, as his shot mechanics are still improving.
#42 | XZAVIER LONG | 6’5 SF | ST. JAMES
Xzavier Long is coming off a productive season at St. James in which he shot 55% from the field and averaged close to a double-double. The versatile wing has a raw skill set that should improve over time, but his main selling points right now are effort and defensive potential.
#47 | KORDELL LEWIS | 5’10 PG | RICHARD MONTGOMERY
An experienced lead guard that locks down defensively, Kordell Lewis is a strong candidate for a breakout this spring. Lewis is a capable scorer who does not shy away from any contact in the paint, but is best when he is setting the table and defending at a high level.
#60 | PHILIP STUBIN | 6’0 PG | WALTER JOHNSON
Philip Stubin is a skilled shooter who can play both on and off the ball. Stubin is a reliable playmaker in the ball in his hands. He can work ball screens and find open teammates. Stubin has a quick release and moves well without the ball. Defensively, he gives effort but has to avoid picking up cheap fouls.
