The Warm Up-Standout Guards (Part Two)

Last Sunday at SEED School of Baltimore, Prep Hoops hosted The Warm Up for AAU teams from Maryland, D.C., Virginia and Philadelphia to prepare for the upcoming live period.

Throughout this week, we'll be breaking down the standouts from the guard, wing and forward positions.

Jamie Bergens | 6'2 | Team BBC Select '20

Bergens was efficient throughout the two games on Sunday as a scorer, decision-maker and defender. He can play either on or off the ball and still be a threat. Where Bergens benefitted most is by roaming around the three-point line and awaiting kick-out passes from the bigs or penetrating guards. He did a nice job of making the opposition pay for its delayed close-outs by making three's consistently.

Brendan Davis | 5'8 | Maryland 3D White '20

Davis did an effective job at conducting his team as a floor general. But make no mistake, if there is an opportunity to be a scorer, Davis will take it. He utilizes change-of-pace dribbles effectively to keep his man off balance and has a quick explosion step to get into the paint. From there, Davis finished with soft touch or found open teammates beyond the arc.

Ish Leggett | 6'2 | Team Durant '20

Leggett's three-point shot was on target for Team Durant throughout the two games. With a mixture of tough takes the to rim, Leggett really made his presence be known as a sniper from outside. What I liked about Leggett's effort was after he would make a three, he wouldn't jog back on defense. He would pick his man up full-court, pressure when his man had the ball and deny when he didn't.

Darius Maddox | 6'5 | Team Durant '20

Maddox stood out especially in transition where his athleticism and ability to finish around the rim could be displayed. He couldn't get in rhythm from three, but he was efficient as a scorer from mid-range and in. Maddox used his length when Durant would apply a full-court press to disrupt passes and create fast break opportunities for his team.

Jack McGaha | 5'11 | Maryland 3D Red '20

McGaha came out from the start on fire with his jumper. The 5-foot-11 guard scored eight points in a row, six of which came from beyond the arc in his team's first game. McGaha has a quick trigger and shoots with confidence. A few times after he let it be known he was a three-point specialist, McGaha would bait his defender into closing out aggressively and take one or two dribbles to convert on a mid-range jumper.

Cam Sapienza | 6'0 | Maryland 3D White '20

Sapienza scored at an efficient clip for MD3D White throughout their games on Sunday. The sharpshooter was making a living from three, but also showed improvement with his off-the-dribble game as a play-maker. Sapienza isn't going to blow you away with athleticism or quickness, but his IQ counters enough to make up for weaknesses. He anticipates defensive rotations effectively and knows when and where the ball should be going. Sapienza also did an excellent job of being a help defender and drew a couple of charges on as the guards penetrated towards the rim.
