Throughout this week, we’ll be breaking down the standouts from the guard, wing and forward positions.
Earl Timberlake | 6’6 | Team Durant ’20
Timberlake could pass for a wing player as well as a guard, which alone speaks to his versatility on both ends. Sunday, the 6-foot-6 brute scored from all three levels. Timberlake’s strong frame allows him to finish through contact as if no one is in his way. One one possession, one of Timberlake’s teammate penetrated and kicked a pass out to him while he was standing directly at the top of the key. Timberlake caught it, dribbled once and rose up for a power two-handed slam in traffic. His jumpshot has always been the weakest area of his offensive game, but Timberlake showed great progress by cashing in on multiple three’s in both games.
Xavier Lipscomb | 6’2 | Team Durant ’20
Lipscomb is the type of player that can impact a game in several ways. He may not put up a ton of points, but when he scores, his shots come within the offense and are usually open looks. As a facilitator, Lipscomb communicates well to his teammates in where they be if they are out of position. He displayed great basketball IQ as a passer and finding mismatches on the floor. Defensively, he guarded his man full court effectively by making his match-up turn multiple times when dribbling up the floor. He was also an active communicator as an off-ball defender.
Justin Cohen | 6’4 | Team Hardwork ’19
Cohen made his presence known right off the bat Sunday afternoon by lighting it up from three. At 6-foot-4 with the frame of a linebacker, you’d expect Cohen to do his damage from inside the paint. While he isn’t afraid to finish around the rim, Cohen is a sniper from three. He scored an event-high 26 points (including four three’s) in Team Hardwork’s first game. Cohen also displayed play-making ability off the dribble as well as being an effective rebounder for the guard slot.
Jordan Guerrero | 6’4 | Team BBC Blue ’19
Guerrero had two solid performances on Sunday for Team BBC Blue. His team usually rotates a five-in, five-out substitution pattern. When Guerrero was in, he made an impact. He shot efficiently from beyond the arc and had multiple break-a-way lay-ups after stealing the ball defensively in the passing lane.
Kendall Walker | 5’11 | Maryland 3D Red ’20
Walker had a productive day for 3D. Not only did he do a good job of running the offense, but he didn’t force any of the shots he attempted. Moreover, Walker was a threat from three and around the rim. As a team, 3D gets into the paint to open up others on the perimeter. On multiple occasions, he knocked down open three’s. Walker also attacked close outs effectively and either finished with soft touch in the paint or passed to an open teammate.
