Although the Texas GASO in Duncanville was not a “circuit” event, there were still plenty of talented prospects. Let’s take a look at some of the “Under the Radar” standouts that garnered some attention this weekend.
Cam Jeng
6’3 Combo Guard, Cy Parks High School class of 2020, Texas Takeover Elite Ned (AAU)
The only person that can stop Cam Jeng, is Cam Jeng. This kid is relentless. Moreover, he is a hard worker and nearly unstoppable when attacking the basket. The passion and energy he brought this weekend was absolutely infectious, particularly on the defensive end. In addition, he showed that he has a soft shooting touch and is capable of making deep threes. But he definitely hung his hat on being aggressive, getting to the rim and finishing. He was vital in Texas Takeover Elite Ned’s run to a GASO section championship.
Paxton Coley
6’6 G, Keller High School class of 2020, FW Jayhawks Mouser (AAU)
This kid was amazing Friday night at the Duncanville Fieldhouse. Coming off of a foot injury, Paxton showed no signs of any rust. He hit shot after shot, from all three levels, with ease. Standing 6’6 tall, he has the ability to shoot over most of his defenders. Also, he finds creative ways, off the ball, to get open and to get easy looks. He is a tough shot maker who is able to make contested long ranged jumpers.
Jemarcus Holt
6’5 G, Dulles High School class of 2020, Houston Raptors Benjamin (AAU)
Jemarcus did a little bit of everything for the Raptors this past weekend. Having seen him play before, I expected to see him find ways to score the ball. What I didn’t expect was for him to affect the game in every other aspect of the game as he did. He rebounded the ball well, found open teammates and passed the ball effectively. Also, he defended extremely well, both on the perimeter and down low in the paint. The combination of his length and quickness caused mismatches and was a problem for opposing teams all weekend.
Thirhrey Smiley
6’5 F/G, Klein High School class of 2021, Texas Takeover Elite Kemp (AAU)
Smiley is extremely long and athletic. He stretched the floor this past weekend with his shooting ability but his bread was buttered by attacking the teeth of the defense and finishing. Defensively, he caused issues for his opponents with his length and he rebounded well after altering shots. Against the Arkansas Bandits, all of his attributes were on display as he finished with 19 points, 10 rebounds and 2 blocks. The sky is the limit for this young player
Payton Laubach
5’8 PG, Greene County Tech High School class of 2020, Arkansas Bandits (AAU)
Payton. Laubach. Absolute. Shooter. Whether it is off the dribble, spotting up, off of a screen, it does not matter. This kid is going to make nearly every shot that he takes. It was actually surprising when he shots the ball and missed. He moves well on the floor and doesn’t turn the ball over which is great for a player that has the ball in his hands as much as he does.
-John Argue – 6’8 F, Clear Lake High School class of 2019, Sanni Hoops (AAU)
John is a stretch four that can shoot the ball from deep. However, he is also a player who is not opposed to getting in the paint and fighting for rebounds. Against the Shooting Stars, Argue had a huge game, posting 26 points and 16 rebounds to help secure Sanni Hoops with the win. He finishes well on the block and has great footwork which is necessary for someone with a wiry frame like his.
