There’s a handful of club programs in Iowa that can claim to be among the state’s elite, All Iowa Attack is certainly one of them. And with a stellar crop of 15U guys entering the fold this spring, the program appears to be in as fine of form as we’ve seen in the last five years. That 15U unit won the title in Ames last weekend, defeating a pair of Howard Pulley teams in the semis and finals to do so. It’s headlined by Ames’ Corey Phillips, Dallas Center-Grimes’ Cole Glasgow and eighth-grader Chase Henderson (Hoover), plus a terrific supporting cast. That squad will win a lot of games this offseason. The 16U Attack unit is going to be one of the state’s best teams, hands down. It’s headlined by Angelo Winkel, Marcus Morgan and Karson Sharar, and finished second last weekend, barley loosing to Howard Pulley in the finals. The 17U squad also advanced to the finals, also losing to Howard Pulley.
Trevion LaBeaux
We got our first look at Waterloo East freshman Trevion LaBeaux last weekend, and he certainly did not disappoint. A 6’3 guard, LaBeaux was playing up a grade with Attack 16U and still was one of the team’s and the tournament’s most dynamic players. It’s his athleticism that is striking, he’s already one of Iowa’s most explosive atheltes. Once he learns how to control that elite athleticism, he could be scary good. Expect him to debut high in the forthcoming 2022 prospect rankings.
Bryce Coppock
Each spring we see a handful of performances that could be considered special, Bryce Coppock turned in the first one of the season when he drooped a cool 30 despite being double-teamed and trapped for most of the second half against Iowa Prep Red 17U. The Newell-Fonda guard is already among the state’s all-time leading corers and projects to join the 2,000 point club next season. Coppock makes Tryon Gym 17U must-watch hoops for any college coach looking to find an elite scoring gem.
Tune Up
This was out first grassroots tournament of the 2019 season, and it’s become customary for us to start our coverage at the Super 16 each April. It’s a great tune-up for the grinder of a grassroots season that follows. The event is small enough to make it a perfect entry point into season without being overwhelming. And with All Iowa Attack being the host team, it gives us a great opportunity to lock in on their loaded teams. After knocking off the rust at this fine tourney, we feel well-prepared to cover the monster ROCK Classic next weekend in Madison, WI.
Elite Facility
Each year we cover tournaments at All Iowa Attack’s home, the Fieldhouse in Ames, and it never ceases to amaze us how stunning the facility is. We can’t have any way to prove this, but it has to be among the most dazzling club basketball facilities in the entire country, at least in the Midwest, and it’s definitely the best in the state. We overheard, one more than one occasion, parents and players gushing over the magnificence of the facility. It’s truly a treat to cover events there.
