Kijuan Thompson– Give 2022
Thompson took over in Give 2022’s big win over Pluto Prospect to start the day as he finished with 17-points. He distributed only early on but then he started to get his own for the remainder of the game. The way that he got it done was in a very selfless way. He ran the offense and was able to use his defense as a way to get going offensively and there were plenty of fast break points generated off of turnovers, Thompson was the main beneficiary as he filled the lanes well and got to the rim. On offense he is best as a slasher that can finish in traffic and his 17-points led the way for Give 2022.
Deuce Benjamin — New Mexico D1 Ambassadors
Benjamin is a guard that is not afraid to shoot the ball. He attacks the paint and is a confident scorer with plenty in his repertoire. He was able to start runs by himself and in Saturday’s win at Manual he was the kickstart to the offense and the Ambassadors did not look back from there. He is able to score in multiple ways and played plenty of off-ball. Once he knocks down the 3-ball consistently he is going to be a force. He played great on-ball defense and had a few rips in the open court to start the break. His 19-points was not the only thing that stood out on the day – but it was impressive to say the least.
Brock Wisne– Colorado Rough Riders
Wisne is a very skilled big man with great size and strength. He was able get whatever it is he wanted over the smaller defenders and showed that it is not only the massive size that gets him going but he is a skilled big man that understands how to score. He finished well around the rim and allowed the Rough Riders plenty of second chance opportunities as he crashed the boards and was able to score on the block. He finished with a double-double of 15 points and also recorded 12 boards. On defense he moves around the floor well and went after shot attempts. He had a few blocks and made shots difficult for the opposing team.
SSA Hoops – Howard Johnson
Johnson had himself a weekend and it started with a solid outing on Friday. He was one of the most consistent scorers in the entire tournament and he was able dominate offensively by both getting in the paint and finishing and also knocking down 3-pointers. In his first game he was able to be productive in the open court by getting out and running. He scored 20-points and was the leading scorer but did not stop there as he followed that game up with 24-points. He is a shot creator that destroyed in ISO situations. He demands the double-team and passes out of it and moves around until he is free. When it does not come he is able to score as he is a confident shooter that is aggressive offensively. He is a solid scorer that gets it done both inside and out and his shot was falling as he knocked down five 3-pointers in the second game. Pick your poison with him.
Colorado Miners – Obi Agbim
Agbim is different. I was excited to see him in a different role as he was an X-factor for his state championship team but he was aggressive for the Miners and takes on the leadership role. He is able to attack the paint and is so quick with his first step that it leaves defenders guessing. He has a smooth pull-up in transition and that was on display. He finishes at or above the rim and controls his body. He also is an above average rebounder who can start the break himself. He had a couple blocks and assists as he made a big mark on defense as well as finished with 18 points as he stood out as one of the standouts on the day.
