Many of the teams in the top 15U-17U Divisions fought for the opportunity to win a championship on Sunday, but they all fell short respectively. Below is a quick look at five prospects who stood out throughout another eventful day.
JOSIAH HARDY | 6’6 F | 17U DISTRICT BASKETBALL CLUB/GONZAGA ’20
Watching Josiah Hardy improve in recent months has been a lot of fun. One thing that stood out almost immediately today is that he has become a confident shooter from mid range. Hardy was a major impact player for DBC on the defensive side of the ball. He’s got good length which along with his relentless motor enabled him to play tenacious on ball defense. Hardy was best offensively in transition, where he played with pace and consistently got to the basket.
WADE JACKSON | 6’2 G | 17U DISTRICT BASKETBALL CLUB/GONZAGA ’20
Wade Jackson could be one of the breakout performers in the WCAC next season. He is becoming a tremendous defensive player and a vocal presence on the floor. Jackson picks up full court, using his length to smother opponents on the ball and create deflections. He’s a downhill-type guard who is becoming adept at slashing into the paint and finishing in traffic. Jackson can create his own shot off the bounce, but we’d like to see him convert at a more consistent rate.
KHYRIE STATON | 6’2 G | 16U CRUSADER NATION/ST. FRANCES ’21
Dynamic would be a good word to describe Khyrie Staton. Staton is a shifty guard with serious burst, and he is very crafty with the ball. He displayed a quick release and smooth shot mechanics. We’d like to see him utilize pump fakes to keep the defense off balance a little bit more. Staton’s toughness and willingness to fight for every 50/50 ball was impressive.
O’MEECH WILSON | 6’5 F | 16U CRUSADER NATION/NORTH COUNTY ’21
At first glance, it doesn’t take long to determine that O’Meech Wilson looks the part. He’s got broad shoulders, long arms, and good athleticism. Wilson is a tremendous rebounder both in and out of his area, but also an excellent shot blocker who displays good timing and instincts. He also showed the ability to step out and knock down spot up threes. It will be interesting to track Wilson’s progress moving forward.
JALEN WARLEY | 6’5 G | 16U TEAM DURANT/WESTTOWN ’21
Jalen Warley is looking more and more like a bonafide high major lead guard. He’s sprouted up to 6-foot-5, and has a wingspan closer to 6-foot-8. Warley is a superb rebounding guard who can handle and changes speeds smoothly to keep defenders off balance. He makes that look ahead pass that ignites a fast break, but can also shoot, read ball screens, penetrate defense, and finish with floaters or in traffic. Watch out for Warley this spring and summer as he could be one of the biggest stock risers on the east coast.
