Continue ReadingSeattle Select High Academic Director Chase Young has put together and coached some of the best players and teams in the state for nearly two decades. For the last 4 years, Chase has ran a successful program with Seattle Select, geared towards high GPA student-athletes. This year’s 16u group is led by well-respected coach, Zac Townsend.
Program Background: The Seattle Select High Academic program has been in business for 4 years and counting, providing competitive basketball teams for high level student-athletes. This program is very much unlike any other in the area, as they truly provide maximum exposure for their players in a variety of tourneys and camps in different regions throughout the country. Their players attend camps in LA, Washington, Oregon, and travel to Yale each year to play in front of 100’s of East Coast college coaches at their Elite camp. They also play in the Prep Hoops Circuit, along with local NCAA Evaluation Tourneys and the Indiana Gym Rats National Tournament at the end of July. Players will gain exposure to literally hundreds of colleges from D1, D2, D3, NAIA and JC’s. It is the ultimate goal of Seattle Select to provide opportunities for their players to find the right fit academically and athletically. All players have a 3.5 GPA or higher, except for special circumstances. No other program in the state holds their players to this standard in the classroom. Some other things that stand out about the program are:
1. Weekly skills training, practices, R3BAR physical conditioning
2. Weekly mindful messages, and nutritional dieting programs
3. Tour at least 10 colleges a year and meet with their head coaches on their campuses
4. Scholarship student-athletes that can’t afford the program or travel.
Some notable players Chase Young and Seattle Select helped guide and coach in the class of 2019 are Brock Ravet (Gonzaga), Clayton Whitman (SPU), Charles Elzie III (College of Idaho), and others on the Alumni list…https://www.
Roster: Seattle Select 16u
2021 5’10 PG/SG Griffin Knowles, Bishop Blanchet HS
Griffin is an athletic, physical, polished guard who takes great care of the ball and puts pressure on defenses from the jump. Whether aggressively attacking the paint or getting to his spots to knock down pull up jumpers, he can fill it up. Defensively he uses his length and quickness to lock up opposing guards. With more help at the PG spot, look for Griffin to play off the ball a bit more and be used as a primary scorer for Seattle Select.
2021 5’9 PG Shane McGaughey-Fick, King’s HS
A quintessential point guard, Shane hits the spring/summer circuit looking to build on a strong sophomore campaign in which his King’s HS squad took 3rd at state. Shane plays with great pace, always finds the right guy and is a more than capable shooter. In addition to being a maestro on offense, Shane does a great job of using his high IQ to be a solid defensive PG. He’ll look to continue to expand his offensive package while playing with his Seattle Select squad.
2021 6’0 PG/SG Jared Roznos, Seattle Prep HS
Jared is an elite athlete who has shown tremendous strides over the past few years. In his sophomore campaign at Seattle Prep, he served as a starter in half of his games and was tasked with guarding the best player on opposing Metro league squads. In addition to being a lock down defender, Jared uses his physical frame to slash and attack defenses in transition. The next step for Jared is trusting his jump shot and taking opportunities to be more aggressive in the half court.
2021 6’2 SF Quinton Jordan, Garfield HS
Quinton put himself on the map this past football season as one of the best athletes in the state, taking home 1st Team All Metro honors as a slot receiver. He then took his talents to the hardwood and served as a part-time starter for the Garfield Varsity hoops squad. Quinton is a physically imposing player who uses his brute strength and athleticism to attack the basket relentlessly. He is a capable shooter who can get hot but is at his best in transition. Often called on to guard bigger players, Q never backs down from a challenge and more than holds his own.
2021 6’6 SF/PF Garrison Kepley, North Creek HS
Garrison had a breakout sophomore campaign for his North Creek HS squad in their second year of existence. He averaged 11 PPG, 5 REBS, 2 ASST and 1 STEAL a game in a his first season as a FT starter. Garrison is still growing into his lanky frame but has figured out how to play above the rim and use his length to change/block shots. As he continues to grow into his body the next step will be developing a more consistent jump shot and tighter handle.
2021 6’3 PF Tyler Korman, Bishop Blanchet HS
Tyler played the role of an undersized four this past season for Bishop Blanchet’s Varsity squad. He earned minutes for his hustle, heart and scrapiness. Whether he’s diving on the floor for loose balls, taking charges or out muscling guys for rebounds he competes relentlessly. He’ll need to expand his offensive game to be a major factor on that end but impacts winning by doing the little things that every team needs.
2021 6’5 PF/C TJ Joseph, Garfield HS
TJ looks to make the jump to varsity at Garfield in the fall but for now he’ll help hold down the middle for Seattle Select. A wide body stretch 4/5 with a nice touch and solid footwork, TJ will have ample opportunity to impact games for his squad. His area of growth is being more aggressive on the glass which will lead to more easy scoring opportunities.
2021 6’4 PF Sean Harmon, Bishop Blanchet HS
Sean is another dual sport athlete who displays toughness and physicality. He has solid range on his jumper in addition to being a solid passing big man. Look for him to be active on the glass and to consistently knockdown mid range shots for Seattle Select this spring and summer.
2021, 6’1 PG/SG Alex Pape, Roosevelt HS
Alex was a contributor for a surprising Roosevelt squad in the Metro league this past season. Alex is a high IQ player who can shoot it with range and get hot quickly. He has a quick first step and uses a solid handle to get past defenders for crafty finishes, pull up jumpers or slick passes to his teammates. As he continues to get stronger, his game will evolve. Look for him to be a key contributor this spring/summer.
2021 6’0 PG/SG Dayn Quinton, North Creek HS
Dayn was also on North Creek’s varsity squad this past winter but looks to increase his production on the circuit this spring/summer. A solid athlete with a quick release and feathery jumper, Dayn will serve as a knockdown shooter and facilitator for Seattle Select. Improvement on the defensive end will help Dayn carve out a major role moving forward.
2021 6’1 SF Jack Prohaska, Bishop Blanchet HS
Jack is a high IQ player who does a little bit of everything while being hanging his hat on being an elite defender. He often finds himself in the right time and place for loose balls, put backs and nifty interior passes. His jump shot could use some retooling but don’t let the funky release fool you as he is a capable shooter.
Coach’s Outlook: Coach Zac Townsend expects his Seattle Select High Academic 16U squad to be highly competitive on the circuit this spring/summer. With 5 returners and 6 newcomers who are all very familiar with one another, expect a cohesive, organized and unselfish brand of basketball. A solid mix of shooters, athletes and high motor players should serve this group well as they look to establish themselves as a top tier team in the NW.
Scout’s Outlook:
This group has a handful of sleepers that will make some noise this spring and summer. In the Rotary NETS Tourney, they finished second in a close battle with Seattle Rotary’s 16u EYBL team. College coaches will get a lot of opportunities to scout these players with their rigorous travel schedule. Coach Townsend will emphasize fundamental, team basketball and get the absolute most out of every player’s potential. Overall, Seattle Select is on a good track to be one of the better 16u teams in the region, as they have a 22 point victory over FOH 16u and wins over NW Coastal Elite, Kent Elite and Blackout.
