The lanky 6-foot-4, 170-pound junior certainly got the job done at Western Christian last season, helping lead his team to the 2A state title. But he knows that his role changes in AAU basketball – and beyond – so he’s focused on showing college coaches his abilities this spring and summer.
This past year was a special one for Richardson and he reflected back on his season. “We all wanted it so badly after what happened last year,” Richardson said. “We all worked our butts off and we got the job done. I felt like I played pretty good. My role for my high school team is a little different than what it is for AAU, but the way we all fit my role was perfect for me and perfect for the team. I went inside to get rebounds since I was the most athletic guys on the team but my coach let me go outside and play a little. There was a lot of freedom.”
For Western Christian, Richardson essentially started at the five since he was the tallest player on the team but didn’t totally always play like one, which is more in line with his position with Team Fly and his future in college. He’s playing more on the wing this spring and it’s in line with how he wants to further develop and showcase his game.
“I’d like to get my handles better and get confidence,” Richardson said. “Sometimes I hesitate on a shot when I shouldn’t and I want to get that fine tuned.”
On the recruiting front, Richardson noted that he maintains contact with Portland and San Jose State, who have both touched base via text. Oregon State has been and remains in contact as well. He’s hopeful that a big spring and summer will lead to even more interest and possibly some scholarship offers as he suits up with Team Fly.
“I’m super excited,” Richardson said. “Last year I just played with them in July and I felt like I fit in super well. My goal is to just get more attention from D-I and D-II coaches.”
Richardson currently ranks as the #11 player in the PrepHoops Oregon Class of 2020 rankings.
